Hey guys I was watching the BJJ Mundials 2005 and after Roger submitted Saulo, he gave his belt to Roger and then spoke to the crowd thanking everybody (which nobody else did).

What does the handing of the belt means?

I'm not too familiar with BJJ tradition so I'll appreciate a little insight

He was retiring and since he got submitted he gave it to Roger out of pure respect

Almost true...

Saulo retired from competing in the Mundials after losing to Roger. But Saulo still actively competes in tournaments..he just won his match at the Sub-X tourney.

I think he wants to concentrate on his brother Xande and take Xande to the very top (not that he isn't/wasn't) and focus more on teaching than competing...You'll see him compete here and there though...

Saulo has just so much to put on the table, if you ask him anything he'll tell you. He has so many smooth techniques to share and a lot of them are very easy to do and basic as well.

Oh thanks for that, I wasn't sure if it was just his decision or given once you're submitted a number of consecutive times by someone (like for example, keeping the world cup after winning it 3 times)

Class act by Saulo

He sounds like a great guy - I would love to train with him or attend his school if there was one near me. I have his video tapes and they are great - his technique is great...

What saulo meant by handing him the belt, he later said in his speech. It was a symbol, he said "jiujitsu's future is in good hands" Refering to the new generation of talent that is taking over the world titles, and the direction of the sport.
Showing that he had nothing but respect for Roger Gracie, and his ability. He was more than happy to see soemone he knew at a very young age, grow to become the best in the world.

Thanks for that, I speak Spanish so I understood abit of what Saulo said but not everything.

Good to see such a class act, Roger must've been touched!

I've only seen clips from his DVDs & they seem very inciteful & one of the most descriptive looking pieces of footage I've seen.

Don't know how many of you guys saw it, so I'll mention it again while we're on the topic.

We recently had Saulo on The FightWorks Podcast as an interview guest and it was really one of my favorite shows we've done so far. He really is a terrific guy, with a sense of "the big picture" of BJJ, as opposed "to this technique does this, this technique is good for that" kind of mechanical understanding of the sport. Definitely recommend that you guys check it out .

Thanks for mentioning that FWpodcast. I can't get it because I've got a Cro-Magnon computer (i.e., Win98), but I've got mad respect for Saulo. One of the classiest athletes in any sport, IMO. And if his instructionals are any indication, we might as well start calling him Obi Wan Ribeiro ...

it's like passing the torch.

yeah. Saulo is into the whole respect, tradition etc. it was a really cool move.

xande is in here iin Oklahoma city right now. Xande and Lovato Jr. came over to watch TUF last night. it was good times. I am going to Xande's seminar tomorrow.

on a somewhat similar note.

i've been thinking...is it worth the $50 to order the Mundials 2005 DVD?

i've dished out a lot for DVD's...pretty much all MMA/BJJ DVD's are wayy too pricey...but i still buy em...as long as they're definitely worth it haha.

Bare in mind that Saulo come sfrom GH and Roger from GB

yea it's pretty much a thing i think he does to people he competes against win or lose he honors them and shows them respect by doing so...he gave his rashguard to my trainer David Avellan...after they had a grappling war...and even though he beat David he honored him for a well fought battle with some nice words and by giving David his rashguard...very classy stuff
