I don't understand why Jones tried to pull guard at the end of the third round. It was the very end of the round. I was worried that the refs would count that as a TD and give the round to Cormier. What strategic purpose could that guard pull possibly have served?

Also, did anyone think that DC was not going for takedowns much? To me it seemed like DC didn't care about the TD for most of the fight, but just wanted to get inside to land punches, which he did have some good success with. Do you think it was because DC could not take Jones down, or chose to use wrestling to stay in the clinch and wear Jones down and dirty box?

Either to troll DC or he honestly saw a shot at a submission or he thought DC was gonna get a TD. Jones is quite courageous and does a lot of crazy creative stuff.

Could be a number of reasons. JJ likes to do crazy shit. He probably also trains stuff and wants to use it in a fight he feels very confident in. He probably spent a ton of time over his career and in this fight training off his back, so he might as well spend a few seconds executing it!

No. The round was about to end, and Jones jumped straight in to DC and wrapped his arms and legs around DC, and let himself fall. No homo, but that's what happened. It didn't look like he was going for a sub, and there wasn't enough time. He just hopped on to DC.

I also thought he might have been trolling. I thought it was a risk for such a close round. I wonder how a big flying knee would have went.

It was a last second flying submission attempt lol. He admitted that it was a mistake that DC was able to take advantage of. He thought DC would go into his guard, but he kind of got a few seconds of GNP instead.

To show judges and the fans :

To show the judges that he was confident

To show the judges he didnt feel under threat and could go for a high risk manoveur cause it doesnt bother him

To show the judges he was fresh and offering more creative attacks than DC

To potentially sink in an amazing submission that people would talk about for years

    etc.

    Not much to analyse really.

While it wasn't the smartest move given his opponent, I think the purpose that Jon jones pulling guard has it that it further keeps his opponent guessing.

To stall out the end of the round in guard without any risk.

Ye, he already did that to Rampage with better execution and always in the last 10 seconds. It's like whenever he hears it's gonna end he tries to do some high risk high reward move.

The guard pull was a total head scratcher, but the question about daniel's lack of persuance of takedowns had me wondering too. It seemed as though Daniel really really wanted to hit him instead of wrestle, but I also think Jon got in his head big time. He missed several easy sweeps and tosses that he used against many others but just never seemed willing to commit to fully or even attempt at all. Sweeps that Gus took advantage of in his fight with jbj that we have seen Cormier pull off as well. IMO, cormier fought stupid, and JBJ followed a perfect gameplan ala couture vs Silvia, to win the fight. It was just genuinely a wierd fight. Neither guy looked liked themselves.

If you pay attention, the last 2-3 seconds of every round he did something flashy/explosive. It's like he counts down from the 10s marker and does something to get the judges attention in the last second.

He had under 10 seconds. He wasn't gonna get anything done and he wasn't gonna be in danger. In short: why not.
