Why did GSP struggle so much with Jake Shields?

I remember watching Shields on Bully Beatdown back in the day and it looked as if the Bully was getting the better of the stand up portion.

Shields had some of the worst, robotic, awkward striking a Pro fighter could have. Yet GSP, who is regarded as a GOAT candidate(not my me) around here struggled to do much with Jake.

GSP had the superior wrestling and FAR superior stand up when compared to Shields yet Shields busted GSP up and was never closed to getting finished by Georges.

    GSP fanatics, explain.

Tough, savvy grappler, with a high fight iq.

Also, GSP was a decision-machine at the time. That is; he wasn't known to take risks in pursuit of a finish.

He only struggled after being poked in both eyes multiple times. It was a huge domination before that.

But grappling is GSP’s biggest advantage and Shields is anything but savy on the standup.

    Terrible explanation.

You mean the Jake Shields who beat Robbie Lawler, Akiyama and Dan Henderson?

It's almost like Jake Shields was a damn good fighter or something.

The promo leading up to the fight probably had him shook. Look at the fear in his eyes here.

GSP kept it standing, and got eye poked pretty badly.

GSP's biggest advantage was striking. The grappling was relatively competitive.

Because of ONE SIMPLE BUT GOLDEN RULE OF MMA

If you don't use it, you lose it.

GSP forgot how to strike somewhere along the way becomin the TDD 50-45 machine.

If GSP foughtt Shields after Hughes 2, I thinkn it would look way way different.

Eye pokes, including blinding GSP in one eye. Up until that point GSP was winning easily.

It would have been a blowout if Sheilds didn't poke him in the eye a million times
