Why Did Forrest Not Believe He Could Beat Silva?

Forrest actually said that he was losing confidence each time that Anderson dodged his shots. It's not that he didn't believe in himself enough, it's just that he didn't have the skills necessary to give Anderson a tough fight on the feet.

He's actually commented on the fight and was a good sport about how childish Anderson made him look and his mindset while it was happening

Some guys commenting don't know what they're talking about. Forrest was handily beating Rashad when he slipped at the beginning of the 3rd round. That's when it all went south.

This guy choked out Shogun and beat Rampage, then made Rashad look "meh" in the stand-up.

i cant believe there is a thread about this...how many years later? How about who cares?

He believed in his talent of taking the dive and did very well.

Absolute mockery of competitive sports. Is shadow boxing the entire fight (if you call it a fight), exxagerated fall with arm motions and all, calls off his own fight by suggesting he's knocked out cold or dying or something and then proceeds to run off before the proper medical checkup (not that he needed it anyway) protocol.

Listening to him talk back in the day he didnt feel he was actually better than anybody but was down to fight and try.

I just watched the fight and it's like Forrest doesn't even believe in himself. He just gives it a lazy try and calls it a night when he's getting tooled. Wasn't it also true that he tested positive for Xanax, an anxiety drug? For a guy who beat Rampage and was tooling Rashad a fight prior, I was always shocked by Forrest's lack of self belief. None of us thought he could stand with Silva, but the guy trained with Couture and was known for underrated wrestling/BJJ and being super huge for the weight class. Why wasn't he training pure wrestling for that fight?
Forrest had just gotten his head pounded in by Rashad. Not exactly the best frame of mind to be in going against the guy many considered the GOAT. And Forrest has always been a bit of a eccentric guy, so it wasn't shocking that had anxiety issues going into that fight.

As for training pure wrestling, the problem was that he didn't have the footwork or speed to get close enough to execute a takedown. Every time he moved within range, Anderson entered the Matrix and blasted him.

Tooled Rashad? Rashad beat the fuck out of him. Brutal stoppage, too.

Forrest may have had more luck if he tried to clinch and stall Silva to the later rounds. Silva was too fast and crafty back then.

Those good ol' days when Silva actually had the speed to land a counter.
When BJ Penn forced guys into a boxing match and beat them up.
When Fedor showed up with a strategy.
When Rickson Gracie was 400-0.

When Keith Hackney was the Giant Killer ..

He probably believed he could win. Forrest was a nice guy, but it's still hard to accept that he was able to get wins over Rampage & Shogun. It's like him on his very best night vs. them on their worst(well 2nd worst, Rampage vs. Ninja was probably Rampages worst showing).

The 2nd fight w/ Shogun, Forrest looked nervous & Shogun was on rhythm & just chin-checked him & put him to sleep w/ hammerfists. Maybe that explains the xanax, maybe it was something else.

Lol the Xanax excuse. He was not high off of a bar while in the cage.

The xanax would have slowed his response time too.
And vs Rashad, Forrest threw everything at him and pretty much gassed himself while Rashad didn't do much and collected on a gassed out Forrest. Rashad is a master of energy preservation in his fights. Ie. Not doing much except for waiting for that strong counter. He was doing really good through tuf and post tuf because they pushed his motivation and cardio but it started to disappear after that.
