The return of Nate Diaz seems upon us, he can't beat anybody at the top but the media thinks he's an actual draw. He's been out for two years and was schooled years ago by Benson Henderson.

I bet Rousey is going to return for another title fight in 2021. That's how UFC seems to do it.

If people want to watch then that’s what UFC will want to sell.

Dan Hardy is fighting again?

he was not good in his prime.

Because they haven't made new stars?

Because clowns like Colby keep trying and failing?

I think that after USADA it is very difficult to maintain a long win streak, And the UFC don’t want to or have troubles marketing guys that lose.
Old stars always work.

Why is Dan Hardys name on that list?

The media thinks Nate is a draw because articles involving him always get a ton of clicks. And because his fights with Conor did better than Conors other huge ppvs(194 & 202) by 300k+.

Can't beat anybody at the top? He beat Conor in between Conor's 2 championship wins. Also beat MJ before MJ smoked Poirier. I'm not the biggest Diaz fan but denying his popularity or his status as top 5-10 LW(depending on the matchup) is silly.

name brand fighters make money, harder to develop a guy out of nowhere

Diaz isn’t selling shit. That’s why he was getting paid 20/20 before the fight with Conor. And he hasn’t fought in two fucking years. The attention span of the casual is not that long.

If anybody believes a guy that couldn’t draw flies to shit if he was holding it in his hand. Is somehow a draw all of a sudden. They’re fucked in the head. He beat Convict. But the top five in LW other than Convict would destroy him.

I don’t understand the thought processes here.

What's the problem with Nate Diaz returning? He's a fun fighter and is at the very least a top 15 LW. If we're cutting everyone who can't beat the top guys, the UFC roster would be a lot thinner.

Same reason Hollywood loves to make sequels. A ready-made fanbase already exists that guarantees the promotion at least breaks even and most likely makes a nice profit. Plus, it's a lot easier, faster and cheaper to revive a brand than to build one from scratch.

It's cheaper to wring out an old sponge and use it again than to buy new ones. They really aren't prepared to invest in publicising anyone that isn't going to do the lion's share of the promotion themselves.

They are also increasing going back to US focused, which narrows down the overall talent pool further (and results in less opportunity for international fans to follow fights live at a reasonable hour)

Happens all the time in sports. There's always a comeback fight/run that keeps fans coming back. George Foreman came back after 10 years or so and became champ. Jordan retired from basketball, went to go play baseball for 2 years, came back and won 3 championships, retired again, then played for the Washington Wizards. Is normal.

And Nate also schooled Donald Cerrone and MJ, and was the first guy to finish Jim Miller (back when Miller was moving into title contention).
There are top guys Nate can beat.
He probably finishes Barboza and Poirier.

With team sports, even if the players change over time you have the feeling that it is still "my team" and so you have loyalty and long-term interest in continuing to watch. So the marketing can focus on the team brand along with all the gear and such. With fight sports unfortunately even the best guys often have a fairly short run. Even if you get totally into it for a while, I find that my interest varies over time.

Basically, to get around this problem, the promoters really have to go overboard. That's why they have to fake all these grudges, encourage the guys to trash talk, and so forth. Furthermore, you have to concentrate on the organization as the brand. So it is quite a different strategy and frankly it is probably much harder type of sport to market than team sports.
