Why can't the UFC accept performance enhancing drugs like Pancrase did?

Public perception obviously

UFC owners' dream would be to convince the public that there was rigorous drug testing while letting everyone juice like crazy behind the scenes

More juice means less pullouts, less weight misses, and more exciting fights.
Just like Olympics. All of them "free of drugs".

It was even encouraged informally for the fighters to get juiced during the Pancrase days. Why does the UFC need to take a moral stand here?

Pancrase was never shut down by any governing body, yet it was without regulations. Nobody could argue it wouldn't work.

there has to be some sort of air of drug testing...why can't the ufc do drug testing like other major league sports? like the nfl? they have drug testing...but not freaken USADA..doing random testing...that's crazy.

Why can't people stop making threads like this

The UFC is deathly afraid of having it's own Chris Benoit, which is always a risk if you let PED and drugs run freely among fighters.

Umm no. There is no scientific link between roids and that shit. Why aren't more people killing their families? One guy did it in wrestling.

This guy does roids. You gonna call him a pussy or say he is gonna kill his family? lol

Same reason they can't allow swords and shields like the Romans did. Times change, and what the public will allow changes with it.

I hope I'm still alive when we get the first generation of genome edited fighters. Transhumans will rule the UFC.

This shit is not legal to abuse for non medical purposes. Baseball let it go unchecked and some "nutrition" companies basically became drug distributors, and at least one person went to federal pound me in the ass prison. That's not much different than pushing crystal meth as far as the federal government is concerned. UFC didn't want to run the same risk, especially since the politics of their bozo President run afoul of many powerful congressmen.

Haven't read through all the responses but no-one seems to think of litigation as a reason to be seen to be combatting ped use.

If a company like the UFC was seen to be encouraging or even just not discouraging peds, and someone got killed, hurt, or ended up being affected later in life, people would be trying to sue them left and right. I'm confident at some point fighters will begin to try it anyway, but the fact that UFC is seem to be doing everything in their power to prevent drug use as far as is reasonable will be their saving grace.

And before you say "but the UFC would win anyway", it's still bad publicity and a risk that every big company will try to avoid if they can.

TL;DR --- the UFC doesn't want to end up in court

In Japan its entertainement first, safety for the athletes/contestant second.

  • To retain their legal status
  • To reduce conflict with state sporting commissions
  • To remain on network and cable TV
  • To give parents a reason to support kids who may see it as a career path
  • To keep sponsorship deals rolling in
  • To manage public perception

and more premature death, more health issues

Some PEDs are illegal and nobody should feel compelled to become a criminal, or risk their health, in order to compete on a level playing field.
Maybe they should find a new line of work then? No one wants people pulling out of fights constantly, being tired or injured. Its always been more about entertainment.

LOL.......you need to do a little research there bud.
There's entire books written on crazy shit that's happened behind the scenes with pro wrestlers, body builders, and other athletes that were abusing steroids.

I used steroids briefly in my 20's, and the shit changes your personality big time. I do believe that you have to sorta already be crazy for roids to push one over the edge, but we're talking about pro fighters here. Most of these guys are capable of doing some crazy shit already. Add to this that it's not fair to basically force clean fighters to destroy their long term health just to be able to compete

Funnily enough UFC used to get a lot of criticism on here for turning a blind eye to how easy it was to pass the commission fight week tests. USADA received a pretty positive response on here but there were a few who saw the downside.
It was the commissions who brought in random testing to a lesser degree. A few got caught quickly, most notably Anderson. Publicity wasn't great and USADA was brought in so UFC could appear to be ahead of the issue
