Why can't I just belong to the human race, why must I associate my self with the country I live in?

I find patriotism ridiculous. I'm American because I was born, live and pay taxes here but I feel no allegiance to this country, it's just the place I live. I give no extra Fucks to people living here than I do to some person living half way around the world....I care about everyone the same. At the moment I feel this is the best place for my family and I to live but the second I thought there was a better place I would be on the first thing smoking to move there.

I'm not trying to shit on America because compared to many other places it's a much better place to live in IMO but I don't get the Idea I have to love my country...it's just the piece of land with rules I choose to reside in.

Why must we define our selves based on the piece of land we were born and live in?

you don't have to. I'll allow it.

Who is forcing you to do this? I mean, you have an American passport and address, but nothing prevents you from otherwise living your life without insufferably much association.

Welcome to Obama's America.

the hippies killed patriotism. Seems like anyway. How can you be proud of your country's actions when they're put in such a poor light for so long?

Reality killed patritism. People started waking up and realising how stupid the idea is.

Right on, TS! I'm an American, but I consider myself a citizen of the world. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, that doesn't mean I'm ready to open up the borders.

the idea is actually great I think. I get it. It's the practice that gets difficult. I think the last time I felt patritotic, and it's a bit embarassing to admit, is when Obama announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed.

Patritism is silly, juvenile and destructive. When Bin Laden got killed I was happy an insane mad man was stopped but it had nothing to do with America.

Okay you have our permission, you can belong to the human race.

I love Swedish women, sushi, french cinema, Grunge, NFL, Austrian classical music, Australian lifestyle and German philosophy.

I have no allegiance to a country that helps me prosper and make a living by have proper laws, schooling, medical facilites and roads and bridges. I pay taxes here, but I don't care what happens here. I care just as much about someone half way around the world as I do my neighbor. I could of been born in squalor with no real chance for a decent life but I was lucky enough to be born here (or at least live here) and I show how much I care by saying I don't give a fuck.

The worst kind of Liberal.

Interdependance is human reality. No man can function alone in modern society and having someone to depend on for safety, social interaction and services is a must. In order to satisfy these needs, human have an innate tendancy to align themselves with other humans for various purposes, thereby forming several concentric circles of sub-socieatal ties, with the innermost being the closest and most important to an individual, if for no other reason thean for the fact that your neighbor is more likely to help in case of a fire than a person that lives 1000km from you.

Love of country comes into play for different people at different places. Some people find existential security in being a part of a larger tribe and put country above family while some don't. But patriotism is fairly important as the love of country is often times indicative of the love of that country's society, and sometimes those that rate love of country as a highly important factor can equate the lack of love of country in an individual as lack of love, or criticism, of that country's society and in turn themselves. This being considered patriotism is not only a love that one diplays for their country and therefore an individual sentiment, but also the connecting factor between an individual and others that he doesn't have family ties with.

Being European, and more importantly a Euro-federalist by conviction, I have to say that I've found myself envying and abhoring US patriotism at times. These days I mostly find myself envying the US for it since the EU doesn't have that kind of a connecting factor between its people. The only ones loving Europe as a whole and feeling fraternal ties with other Europeans are those of us that live and work all over Europe, those of us that have international marriages, those that study or practice EU law or trade or are involved in culture. I realise that the average middle class or lower class European has no real concept of what the EU is and therefore fears and distrusts continental integration and here is where I would love to have the kind of supra-familial connection between Europeans that Americans seem to have.

You should be happy to have it. Patriotism is not only a blind love for one's country but also the willingness to critisize it to make it better.

I've never understood patriotism either really.
It's exactly the same as being proud of having brown hair or blue eyes.

Who said I don't care what happens here...and why I got to be a liberal?

And no...I don't care more about someone simply because they are in closer proximity to me.

LMAO

Its easy to say that when your not from the shit holes that make up 90% of the world.

Id partly agree on muricanisms. But others have old ancient cultures blood lines genetics looks and way about things hard not to side with that, of course the other side might be from where half shit in the streets so when they get out they quickly adopt their new home as their own.

Life is not always perfect. Some things you just have to accept. If everyone had the exact life they wanted we would be extinct pretty quickly. We need other people, we need societies. We need things to keep us in check. Deal with it.

Patriotism is pride in heritage, it is pride in what your family has helped shaped and provide for you and it is a selfless sense of responsibility to your community to ensure you provide a better land for others to prosper in and for your kids to grow up in. There has been a shift away from this pride being on a national scale to being on a global scale, which I do understand but I think anyone that isn't patriotic doesn't really value the work of there ancestors and the people around them. I'm not saying cry during your national anthem every time or wave your flag but take some pride in your nation, defend it and cherish it, otherwise it will be ruined.
