Why can AA still compete in the UFC, while Sylvia can't do lower level?

Sylvia knocked Arlovski out twice. They're from the same generation and about the same age. AA can still beat UFC level competition. I feel like Tim Sylvia would have trouble in the amateurs. Why is there such a huge difference in their ability now?

Because they're not the same person.

How is this even a question?

Different camps and Arlovski's willing to learn and to stay competitive in the game.
Also Arlovski seems to be much smarter with money, so he can afford the training

How do we know?. I mean if Sylvia was in UFC now I'd heavily favor him to use guys like Struve and Tai Tuvasa as punching bags

By that logic, you could have asked about Viacheslav Datsik?

Great thread though. Would read again.

AA still trains hard, learns / adapts, and takes care of himself. TS not so much.

There was always rumors that Tim sylvia was actually fairly older than what his listed age was. So if that was actually true it could explain how he suddenly dropped off so bad when he didn't seem as old as we thought.

In the US fighters get cleared by the athletic commissions, and you have to provide ID.. so that's not really possible for an American citizen.

    "if Sylvia was in UFC"
    He wouldn't be 350lbs.

Also, my aunt could be my uncle.

Sylvia body broke down, serious back issues, weight issues and he's recently had surgery on his arm.

Prime Sylvia was a hell of a fighter and would easily be top 10 today if he was still at the peak of his powers.

You haven't seen him lately. Thats fine but he was pushing 300 pounds and in no shape to use struve and tai as punching bags last I saw him. They'd give him a beat down at this point.

It's purely genetics. I mean, look at Sylvia's body while he was roiding - it did look better than ever, but it still didn't look anything like Arlovski's, and Arlovski has never roided.

Sylvia knocked out Arlovski once, lol. The other victory was a boring decision.

The last time ARlovski and Sylvia fought, Arlovksi knocked him into another realm, but the fight was declared a no contest after Andrei kicked him on the ground. Andrei got the last laugh there.

    Sylvia's too damn fat.

He is retired lol, if he did not retire, then I am certain he would be winning in 2020 UFC HW. I don't think it would take more than 2 minutes for him to drop Juan Adams

He retired because he couldn't fight anymore lol. One commission declared him unfit to fight at one point cuz he was so damn fat.

Arlovski stayed in shape. Sylvia didn't. Some people peak and others plateau. Sylvia proved to be the better fighter because they were both in their primes and Sylvia won twice. He beat an aggressive Arlovski AND a conservative one.

This myth that Arlovski evolved and Sylvia didn't is just people refusing to accept the dismal state of the HW division. Arlovski hasn't shown anything new since then. In fact, he's lost that bounce in his step, he's stiff, he's plodding, he doesn't grapple anymore, he's devolved. The only thing keeping him in the game is that he's kept himself in shape and the division sucks more now than ever.

If today's prospects were any good(even a fraction of the level of Fedor, Kharitinov, Cro Cop, JDS, Sylvia, etc), they'd KTFO this Arlovski, no problem.

Take a look at these two GIFs:

Arlovski leads in with the same combination but:

In the first one, he has perfect form. Light on his feet. Jab and right hand quick and straight down the pipe. His head moves slightly off center allowing him to dodge any potential counter yet keep his vision on his opponent. His hips pivot perfectly. He steps perfectly in range. His stance is still balanced.

In the second one, he's plodding and flat-footed. His hips can no longer twist like they used to. This causes his back foot to come off the ground and fly forward as he punches, also causing his stance to square up and him to lose balance and power. He is so off balance that he no longer has vision of his opponent so he compensates with a backhand. His jab is just flicked up from his hips. His right hand is wild and wide. It's just sloppy.

Both of these GIFs are slowed down. If you watched them at normal speed it is also glaringly obvious how much faster Arlovski was too.

Arlovski has only gotten worse over the years since then and is somehow still competitive. It is a shame for the division.
