Why can’t we have the second amendment evolve, just as guns have evolved?

The word amendment itself means to change. Why can’t we update the laws with the current technology that is completely different from when the second amendment was written? I do think law-abiding citizens should be able to have their own guns. I just don’t understand why these type of assault weapons need to be available to anyone.
