Why are there search engines other than Google?

You are really that far up Google's ass that you want them to have complete control over what information is filtered down to you? Having other options keeps Google in check because otherwise Google would have the sole ability to determine what websites and news you can see. Right now you can jump on another search engine to compare.

Microsoft constantly tries to switch me to Bing but I keep going back to Google. It seems to me that less used search engines would be much easier to influence the algorithm. Any search engine can, of course, push sponsored sites to the top of a search. The most used sites can charge more for that so it might be too expensive for many to do that on the most used sites.
