OK now of course not everyone thinks that but i have seen quite a few replies and posts on this forum (not just grappling section but Sherdog in general) questionning the effectiveness of wrestling and BJJ in a street fight situation. Replies like "Let's see how you BJJ/wrestling does in a real life street fight" or in that genre implying that grappling is not that effective in such a situation.
Assuming no weapon is involved and it's not 17 vs 1 , why wouldn't grappling be effective to dispatch an opponent ? I know a lot of street fights are all about head hunting and throwing wild hooks and haymakers to do the most possible damage the other guy , but most people are capable of throwing a punch unless they are handicapped , too old or whatever. However not everyone is trained in a grappling discipline like wrestling and BJJ. I mean wouldn't it be easy for a wrestler/BJJ guy to wait for a street brawler to rush him , then easily clinch/trip/take him down and then absolutely work him on the ground ? As i said i know the popular image of a street fight is two guys going at it on the feet but why are some people think it's unrealistic for a scenario like the one i described above to occur ?
For the record i don't grapple myself but i'm just intrigued by how an accomplished grappler would really perform in a street fight.
