Why are so many bjj black belts so inactive on the bottom??

Cause in BJJ competition they don't have to worry about being punched in the face, if someone has top control and is punching you, its very hard for you to work a set up and to even try to think. you have to try and defend the strikes while trying to think ahead to how your going to apply a submission and there's just to much at risk. If you miss the sub than most likely your opponent passed your guard or got into much better position to pound you. Its much easier to defend BJJ than it is to be offensive with it.

Many don't want to go for stuff without knowing they " already " have it. Getting passed because you just threw up your legs for a futile triangle sucks ass. If Maia had done that, Shields would have been in side control or back in guard in seconds.
but Maia is a world class grappler who would school Shields when it went to the ground

I think this a lot as we'll
But I guess with no gi to grab, being tired , a strong slippery guy punching you .
Those things just make it hard to lock on a sub off your back

Losing position is a biggie if you go for an armbar or triangle for example and don't hit it perfectly out probably going to end up in a turtle position with your opponent feeding you shots

Sub defense has evolved significantly in the last 10 years. It's hard to sub a guy with a great top game.

Unless the guy on the bottom is Schaub. Then you're fucked.
