Until MMA appeared there was nowhere for American wrestlers to go. They'd train for college level competitions, but that was pretty much the end of the line.

In ex soviet countries they still have huge state-sponsored programmes in the sports they excel at, so they can train full time and have everything paid for by the government. They've been training athletes in those places for world class competitions for decades, so it's no wonder they produce decent athletes.

We just need the UFC to recruit more of them.

thats 1 hell of a thought. i dont think dana and the UFC would give many russian wrestlers a fight though cos the average american wouldnt want to see some russian dudes tossing their idols around the cage

We've seen some legitimate wrestlers in the mma and we've all seen that it takes a lot more than that to be an elite mma fighter

Russia's national sport is Sambo. I'm actually surprised that we don't have more Sambo specialists making their way over to the major MMA organizations.

There is more, and stronger wrestling lineages in Russia, than in the USA. A lot of American wrestlers start out semi late (LHS and HS), whereas most solid Russian wrestlers seem to come from families of wrestling.

Russias national sport is absolutely not Sambo. Soccer and hockey and basketball and tennis are infinitely more popular
