I'd probably include Pikachu and Spongebob as well, they are probably more iconic to anyone under 60 nowadays than Popeye or even Tom & Jerry

Never met someone whos favorite cartoon character was Mickey.
For me Tom &Jerry, no contest. Probably Pikachu for newer generation.
