Dude how old are you, where are you from?

You always seem to miss really obvious choices.

    This one lacks Glenn Close.

    I'm 32 and I live in Canada.

Glenn Close was in my original list. But I didn't think she'd get a lot of votes on here.

I can always rely on you for bad choices TSO..

This shouldn't even be a question. Meryl Streep by a long mile. That woman has more nominations than this entire list combined.

She's on the list though so that defies mathematical logic.

Yes, the most famous and successful actress of all time happens to know the founder of one of the most famous production companies in Hollywood. Not surprised in the least. She's still by far the best actress on that list and her list of nominations speaks for itself

Did also IMHO show the problems women had getting decent roles in the 70's though, pretty clear she was more than a pretty face and a great body from early on but only really started to get many decent roles in the 80's like Long Good Friday, Excalibur, Cal and Cook/Thief/Wife/etc. Probably explains why she was so pissed off at Parkinson at the time.

Depends a lot on what kind of cinema your talking about I'd say, more subtle acting was becoming common in Japan and Europe long before it did in the US, someone like Kinuyo Tanaka for example by the early 50's in Mizoguchi's films.

I would tend to say though that lists of best actresses would be more biased towards more recent decades simply because theres been more opportunities during that time. Personally I would have Juliette Binoche at the top, regularly given excellent performances since the mid 80's and has resisted becoming an "elder statewomen" actress the limits that brings much better than most.

I don't think Portman is really that strange a suggestion, she's been around for over 25 years afterall and has quite a few excellent performances now. The main argument against would I spose be that she does end up being typecast a little "lets see Natalie suffer" seems to be standard casting.

Mizoguchi isn't exactly obscure cinema, maybe not as well know as Kurosawa but he'd typically be in the top 3 of that era with him and Ozu.

The reality is Japanese cinema in the 50's was some of the best cinema in the world helping to point the way that Hollywood only really started to follow in the late 60's and 70's.
