GSP is a hell of a fighter, he is a great choice for #2 MMA wrestler, so no disrespect to him, but he simply did not dominate utilizing wrestling in quite the same way as Khabib.

You won’t find any video of Khabib in the octagon tapping to an armbar or mounted succumbing to strikes (both in the first round), or having his groin torn because he was overpowered in his guard.

Good luck even finding video of Khabib in his back being controlled AT ALL.

GSP was very smart. Very effective at utilizing all of the tools available and the strategies most likely to yield victory, including avoiding the ground and jabbing guys up. Hats off to him. And it is nothing short of miraculous how elite his wrestling was without an NCAA wrestling base or childhood wrestling experience.

But GSP had matches where the grappling was competitive. Khabib, particularly in his prime, was just absurdly dominant, making elite guys look like amateurs on the ground.

Remember that when comparing, one guy is going to have to be better, even if by a nominal margin.

Well said.

One guy is hypothetically better, but there are a lot of variables, and it's impossible to know who was actually better

GSP. GSP faced significantly better wrestlers/grapplers in his career and had a much longer span of time where he was fighting the best of the best. He outwrestled D1 champs. Khabib struggled against some of the more competent wrestlers he faced. Couldn’t take Tibau down and Iaquinta did a fairly good job staying off the mat. Even Conor surprised us a bit against Khabib. Khabib really didn’t face many top wrestlers/grapplers

For me it's:
1. Khabib
2. Randy
3. GSP

Never liked Couture's style, but he was able to hang out with guys who looked a weight class above him with technique alone. That has to amount for something. He also fought in an era with nearly unlimited steroids (well, he wasn't very natural himself, but still - very undersized). GSP I rate third - he was a fantastic wrestler and he didn't have wrestling background. But he was a physical specimen, which helped him a lot. Khabib fought in an era with more drug testing, he is medium sized LW, he doesn't have any notable physical advantages like great speed, explosiveness, etc. He is just extremely technical, he knows what to do in every single second of a fight.

Still voted for Randy, just because it's a shame he got 0 votes.

Its Randy. Randy defined the wrestler category in MMA for a very long time and was the one of the very first successful champions. His clinch and cage fighting game. (Fighting up against the actual cage) was just ridiculous His pace too at the time and just the pressure he put on his opponents was just crazy. I mean look at him folding over chuck and tito and spanking them during their matches. Just a legend

Can someone explain why GPS is the greatest wrestler? So he managed to take people down without tegraphing and counter wrestler other wrestlers?

It wasn't lucky and had nothing to do with wrestling.khabib fought a roided tibau

Which is why it's odd that someone would try to use it against him in a thread about who is the best wrestler.

Khabib had 16 fights prior to his UFC debut, GSP had 5 and faced Hughes less than 3 years after his pro debut. Not really a fair comparison. Khabib in his entire career has never fought anyone with the legacy of Hughes, who’s still the #2 WW of all-time. And he barely fought any wrestlers in his career at all.

Hughes cant striker for shit khabib definetly beats him and khabib ddint fight at ww but he'd still beat hendricks easily
Because Khabib is obviously known for his amazing striking skills

Khabib
Cormier
GSP
Cain
Usman

Jones is the best mma guy overall, but his game was not particularly wrestling based

Bringing up Khabib's fight against Tibau is the same as GSP haters bringing up the Serra fight

Both were early in their runs, and are totally irrelevant to how good they were at their peak
Not the same. One guy went the distance and didn't get sent to the shadow realm, the other guy got KO'd by a .500 pedestrian middle.of.the road fighter a weight class below in his very first title defense.

Better than matt hughes' have you even seen hughes fight before? Khabib atleast has a decent jab, some kicks and an overhand

Obviously it's not the exact same

The point is we all know damn well prime Khabib murders Tibau, and prime GSP murders Serra
