Who Makes the Best All Around Gi ?

Discussion in 'Gear & Equipment Discussion' started by Rio_fightwear, Sep 26, 2010.

  1. Hello All -

We've got a couple of guys at our school arguing about who makes the best all around Gis out there and we wanted to get your opinions (plus we want to expand our Gi choices) . If you were only allowed to have one Gi - what would it be ?

    Thanks,

    Riofightwear

my favorite gi at the moment are the Shoyorolls and OTM. It all really comes down to personal preference and how it fits your body.

I like the following in order:

    Shoyoroll
    Koral
    Tatami
Redstar (I am on the larger side of players, so I take a A4, Redstars are not 100% preshrunk and they dont have an A5 so I have to stretch the jacket after ever wash.)
    Vulkan

I've owned Shoyorolls, Lucky, Atama, Ouano and others, and I think the Isami is in a class all its own. It's remained super soft over time and has not shrunk any more after the first couple of washes. The collar is also the best of any gi I've ever worn--very stiff, but not so thick that it gets in your own way (like the Lucky).

I have a Subculture USA gi. I know that they don't actually make the gi, but I don't know who their gi maker is. I love it. It has the nice thick lapels, and from what I can tell, It's pretty similar in quality to the Koral gis of others I've rolled with. I'd still love to go Koral (and probably will) before too long.

I do, however, prefer more of a judo cut pant, so I wear Tiger Claw reinforced judo bottoms with my Subculture top.

Shoyoroll (if you can get your hands on one)
Fushida (best fitting gi around, and overall super high quality gi)
Faixa Rua Leve (super light yet decent lapel, and great pants)

I have a couple of Atama's, a Black Eagle and an Isami. Overall my favourite is the Atama, but the Black eagle is not far behind and given the price, I'd probably buy a Black eagle before another Atama.

Like someone else said the Isami is super soft and a great Gi but the arms are a little short so i don't wear it that much.

Fushida Komodo is the perfect gi for me.

Thinking about picking up a second one in blue but waiting to hear what 2011 has in store for them :)

I've heard Shoyoroll is nice but I won't know until the batch 7 ships ;)

I had 1000 people fill out a survey about which gis they own and of those, which was their favorite.

I had a statistician process the results and I discuss them here: Jiu Jitsu Theory and Practice
