Who knew Stipe had such high fight IQ? He seems like such a basic jock

Remember when Stipe first came to UFC? He was just that athletic powerful young guy, the kind we see a million times: Todd Duffy, Sean Sherk, Vitor, Bobby Green, etc. No one in 2011 would think Stipe would be standing at the top of the HW division in 2018, winning and dominating based on GAMEPLAN and not his athletic abilities. The fight tonight was GSP levels of technical domination, Francis got completely shut down everywhere, and shutting someone down at HW is double impressive because that raw power trumps almost all gameplans, unless the plan is perfect and executed flawlessly.

A toast to not only the "baddest man on the planet" *ufc hype cringe*, but the (surprisingly) smartest big guy in MMA. Sorry Werdum, Stipe owns that $*#&.

What do you mean? Stipe had the same gameplan against a much more accomplished standup fighter in Mark Hunt and executed it perfectly. Which is also exactly what Stipe was saying the week before the fight when he remarked that Francis isn't the first dangerous striker he faced.

But Miocic gets underrated time and time again. He was the underdog against Werdum, Alistair and Francis.

Excellent gameplan executed to perfection.

He was outmatched physically.

But he had the skill, esperience and conditioning to do what it takes.

It was an admirable performance. Ngannou was much bigger than him and his power is insane.

But Stipe showed determination and execution of a real champ.

He more than deserves being the record holder for most defenses now.

Also seeing Dana being clearly pissed was the sweetest moment of the night. They wanted Ngannou to win so bad.

Everyone got caught up in the Ngannou hype. I have been picking Stipe for days on the threads.

Yeah dana and the ufc marketing team had SUCH a hard on for the "hardest punch" test that ngannou did.
They are lacking stars besides conor, you cant blame them, without stars there's only just stagnation and decline.

I guess you just started watching Stipe fight, guys always been smart and calculated with huge potential even back then.Guys like Sean Sherk and Vitor? They were champions lol.I stopped reading after that (I had Stipe-KO-3 on tapology and junkie)

He was the favorite against Overeem and a slight underdog against Werdum and Ngannou.

Anyway, I'm not sure why this is shocking. Did you expect Miocic to just go out and brawl with Ngannou?

No, he had already an very efficient and elegant boxe.

It's not just Stipe that's responsible for a gameplan, you know. It's his coaches. But he has the sense to listen to his coaches, the willingness to learn, and no ego in the gym to get in the way of doing either.

It was the obvious game plan but he still got carried away on a number of occasions. He got sloppy at the start of the forth and could have easily been knocked out. Was careless. Good win but still not as controlled as you've make it sound.
