Who is this and what happened?

Oliver McCall and Lennox Lewis

McCall started crying, I think there was some shit going on in his life and he was on drugs... don't remember exactly. He was a drug addict for a long time, though, supposedly.

that makes sense. I could tell it was LLennoxxx but i didn't know who the other guy was. Was he getting beat down, and wanted to quit?
Does the fight end there?

I didn't watch the whole thing... I think the ref stopped the fight because he was crying and wouldn't fight back.

McCall had previously knocked Lennox out, and this was their rematch. He was losing, but he wasn't getting destroyed if I remember correctly.

McCall pretty much had a breakdown mid-fight. Wasn't pleasant to watch really.

Yea, i felt bad for Mccall. I mean, people like to sit there and call him a "baby" and stuff for what he did in the ring, but Depression is a serious issue and he seems like he had severe depression. You just don't feel like doing anything at all, and feel like nothing is going to get better when you suffer from bad depression. I hope he has gotten some help since then, which i'm sure he has.

It was kind of funny though how he would just keep walking away with this sad look on his face, not even paying attention to the fight but was still dodging punches and slipping with his hands practically down to his sides. He looked like he forgot Lennox was even in the ring with him, but his boxing instincts were still there when Lennox would try and hit him lol.

God knows I would cry if I was in the right with Double L. Jesus, that is scary...

Oliver used to cry before every bout.. I think he just decided to cry in the ring too because he couldnt get to Lewis that time
'
but yeah.. he was on crack too

This post made me chuckle.

That definitely ranks up there as one of the oddest things I've ever seen happen in a professional prize fight.

As tragic as it was, I always felt sorry for Lennox.

Here was his chance to avenge his devastating ko loss and the guy has a breakdown in the ring. You can see he's wary of letting his guard down as he doesn't want another sucker punch, but he's uncomfortable punching a man who is clearly mentally ill.

This was Lewis' chance to show people what was supposed to happen in that first fight and he ends up looking like the shithead bully who punches the special ed kid while the cool kids cheer him on.

I remember the fallout from this fight in the UK giving boxing some bad press. Horrible story all round, and one of the reasons Lewis never gets the credit he deserves.

It was stopped due to McCall's refusal to engage and fight. He was basically just crying and turning his back.

The history is that McCall is the other guy that KO'd Lewis in addition to Hasim Rahman. This was after Lewis had gained a version of the title by default when Riddick Bowe refused to fight him as a mandatory challenger, so McCall was actually champ for a time.

In this rematch McCall was completely ineffective and, as was stated before, was allegedly battling drug addition along with a host of other personal issues. I watched this fight live and it was just WTF.

One of Lewis's next fights shortly after this was against Henry Akinwande. Curiously enough, this fight was also stopped because Akinwande refused to engage. He was warned several times but repeatedly went for extended clinches and did nothing. Mills Lane was the ref and stopped it after it was obvious that Akinwande wasn't going to fight. It was really wierd at the time that Lewis had two fights in a row where the other fighter basically refused to fight.

EDIT: One thing I forgot: If anyone can find the post fight conference, which was actually the next morning, it is pure gold. I'm sure McCall had some time to collect himself and he was basically trying to say it was some kind of strategy to throw Lewis off of his game. He was quoted as saying "My strategy was -- and I know it sounds kind of absurd -- was a kind of rope-a-dope." Most of the time while he is talking he sounds half crazy and can barely put a sentence together.

Oh god, I completely forgot about that! I remember a newspaper article a couple of days later about "Lennox - the champion nobody will fight". Bowe, McCall, Akinwande - none of them wanted to mix it up with him.

There's a video floating around somewhere of McCall showing his unmarked face off and rambling after the fight. Pretty impressive considering he was wandering round in a daze in the ring with a pissed off Lennox fuckin' Lewis

You guys are way off. IT was part of Olivers plan.

Camacho do it.

Ali do it.

Why don't they let Oliver do it?

I remember thinking it was funny because Lennox couldn't finish a guy who didn't even look like he cared to be there.
