We all know that there are different types of strength, (or perhaps the way in which it is applied) but in your opinion, who is stronger, the top power lifters, the top olympic lifters, or the winners of the worlds strongest man?

I was just thinking about this the other day after reading an article about Louis Cyr, but couldn't come to a conclusion, so I just wanted to see what other peoples thoughts on this are.

In my opinion, it would have to be the top guys in the sport that would also be half way decent in the other two you listed. Most top powerlifters (I know not all of them, Brad Gillingham is an example) mainly do the powerlifts. Olympic lifters can also squat a LOT, and most can probably deadlift a decent amount. They are also very quick and explosive, so might be able to do ok in some strongman events (over head lifts, squat, etc.) Most top strongmen do the strongman events, lots of squats/deads and the olympic lifts (as they have a great carry over to strongman)

So it would have to be strongmen. Most top strongmen can squat/deadlift right up there with power lifters, and most are decent at the olympic lifts. Then it would be olympic lifters, and then powerlifters.

I think in terms of pure diesel, the powerlifting guys are the "strongest."

Strongmen need a more comprehensive combination of strength types (endurance, speed-strength, etc), but probably usually have a lower absolute strength.

I'd put the olympic lifters last because they have the lowest max strength, but the highest power (or perhaps just speed-strength),

Yeah, they are strongest at the 3 powerlifts and that's it.

But top strongmen are pretty close up there in terms of the power lifts. Svend Karlsen has deadlifted like 815 for a tripple years ago. Kevin Nee just deadlifted 800lbs in the gym and he weighs like 240 or 250. At the Arnold Classic last year a couple strongmen deadlifted in the high 900's on the hummerdeadlift (yea I know it's a little bit of a shorter range of motion and they use straps, but come on... it's still in the 900s) I think Savickis did like 980 or 990 or something like that on it.

Lots of olympic lifters have a high absolute strength as well (at least when it comes to squatting) I've seen videos of guys in the low 200s squat in the 700's completely raw.

Yeah, I'm aware of all that. I answered the question with specificity in my response (noting that my rankings were based on absolute strength, and powerlifters have greater absolute strength than anyone else).

If it's simply a question of who are the biggest freaks in the world, I say the dudes in the NFL. Only the NFL has guys 300+ pounds who can run the 40 in under 4.7 seconds and bench over 500 at the same time. .

Did'nt Chris Angel "Mind Freak" deadlift a taxi?

OL by far. There are girls that weigh 130pds Clean and Jerking over 300pds...Thats awesome.

who would win a fight between a shark, a lion, and a hawk?

Lb for Lb Powerlifters produce more total force (strength), but Olympic Lifters produce more power (force/time)

the strong men are the strongest they have endurance and strength. Unlike the powerlifters their strength can last and doenst disappear after 1 rep.

lmao are you serious? lb for lb powerlifters are obese motherfuckers

My apinion is the Worlds strongest men because they are lifting rocks nd thing that are harder to grip next to the weight lifters with a bar to help girp there way to victory.

What is your definition of strong?

Its like comparing apples to oranges. Each of those are different. Powerlifters require maximum strength, weightlifters require a lot of speed strength and strongmen require strength endurance

the dudes from wsm in my opinion are the strongest out of those 3...they have everything, grip, endurance, power, conditioning...

Powerlifters are stronger than all, oly lifters are faster/more powerful, but strongmen are just straight out freaks. They're fitter and have more muscular endurance than either, so by the "useful" definition of strength, strongmen are the best.

Edit: I also think oly lifters are fragile compared to strongmen and powerlifters

Strongman and if you think otherwise, you are a moron.

Alon, why would you think that?

Cage match: Rezazadeh vs. Magnusson :)

It really depends on the weightlifter, the top oly lifters either seem to be amazingly fast and powerful, or just brutally strong. While these lifters are great athletes, I just think they'd tear muscles and injure themselves all over if they had to do the high rep stuff that guys like Magnusson do.

Exceptions exist, I think someone like Rezazadeh would be an animal nomatter what he does, his technique has some pretty basic flaws but he's just so damn strong that it doesn't matter. I think guys like Jesse Maraunde used to oly lift seriously, but I think now he would be very different physically, mainly from the point of view of muscle endurance and the sheer wear and tear he puts himself through.

In summary, Reza wins by sitting on Magnusson :icon_chee
