Both are Legends that's for sure
Hughes does have a win over GSP, which is huge. But you could make the argument (a good argument) that BJ won his first fight with GSP. And he has 2 wins over Hughes, plus he's a 2 division champ.
Matt Hughes, easily.
Hughes by a long shot.
BJ Penn didn't have all that great a career to be completly honest.
BJ but Hughes is now slouch.
BJ Penn fought a very vicious and cruel machida and almost won.
I'm going to go with Matt.
His brother Mark DID pound him behind the barn after all.
Hughes because he was more consistent and knew when to hang up the gloves.
BJ by a fairly large margin! Dude beat Hughes twice and won belts in two divisions! It's the last three pathetic outings that tarnish Penn's legacy but his accomplishments are undeniable
BJ Penn! The Prodigy!!!!
His book "why i fight" is a good read bros. So good I liked it so much, I gave it away to my new bro who happens to have BJ as his favorite fighter, only reason I gave it to him was because he was moving away. He read it and said damn!
Thought I was a fan before but I like him more.
I agree, but they were all beasts. Nick Diaz, Rory Macdonald, Frankie Edgar. No shame in losing to those guys.
Slight edge to Hughes.
Hughes looks better on paper with 7 overall title defenses (non-consecutive). BJ's career was far more interesting and noteworthy.
2 div champ (only 2 in UFC history).
3 division fighter.
Only LW champ to fight at HW.
Dropped the belt voluntarily to chase the best competition
Fought only true UFC champ vs UFC champ superfight in UFC history.
He just had this crazy unique career.
Bjs career is more unique but matt hughes had a "better" career at proving how good he was during his time
Jesus....what a hell of a question.
Both guys are legends.
Hughes was more dominate.
Mods should add a poll.
