For a long time, fighters would almost exclusively attempt to finish or sweep opponents from their guard when taken down. In the modern meta, a fighter will typically scoot to the fence and use it as a means to prop themselves up.

When did this become prevalent in the UFC and which fighter first displayed it in a fight?

Early pioneer.

The whole concept of it happening and becoming commonplace is interesting... I feel like by UFC 150 it was happening regularly. Maybe I'm wrong.

Chuck Liddell with that look in his eye

he invented it because Tito used to smesh against the fence
Later Randy learned to game plan from chuck

This is probably the correct answer. I mean, it doesn't solve who actually developed it, but Chuck was the guy you had a hard time getting down and the harder time keeping him there. He used the cage wall to his advantage. Randy even commented on it during his (Chuck's) first fight with Tito.

That's very interesting, I wonder.

yeah first person to come to my mind is chuck

Tito is on record saying it was him and Chuck who came up with it while training.

The absolute earliest example that I can personally remember was at UFC 12 Judgement Day when Kazuo Takahashi used it to gross advantage to cruise to a Unanimous Decision versus Wallid Ismael. It was the worst display of wall walking, IMHO, in UFC history.

SUPERB fence grabbing in that fight!!

Great example, BTW, respect.

I dunno but Khabib definitely figured out how to punish people for trying. I feel like that's something that doesn't get talked about much, but wall walking against him was just a good way to eat some punches and burn your gas tank

Indeed. Chuck is the O.G. of defensive wrestling, particularly wall-walking.
He also attempted to rise as soon as his butt hit the floor. Thus he could sometimes just stand up out of it.

I can't really remember exactly, but it was with Liddell, Couture, Griffin...etc 2004/5ish. You'd have to go back and watch those UFC events, were talking TUF1/2 era or possibly a year earlier. I remember guys being actively coached to use the cage to, "walk up the cage," it's almost first nature now.

I always respected chuck's mentality on getting up. He didn't care if he had to eat some shots to get up he posted and got up asap every time. I dont get why guys who are clearly outclassed on the ground dont do the same. The risk of getting finished vs the risk of staying down should make the decision for you.
