White House: President Obama will NOT attend the funeral for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

Not like conservatives can.
Oh, heck no. When they don't like...oh, a President, for example...they are still totally respectful.

That is obviously different. Obama is a thug who supports thugs, he hates America and the Constitution.

Actually I think it cost too much for Michelle and him to go, you know, all this expenses for travel and clothes.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama paid less than two minutes of respect to the late Antonin Scalia while the Justice lies in repose at the Supreme Court.

Friday, the Obamas spent approximately 35 seconds in front of the casket and then approximately 67 seconds in front of the portrait of Scalia.

The Obamas will not be attending Scalia’s funeral on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill will be attending.

According to the White House pool report, Obama spent approximately 15 minutes in another room “meeting with others.”

In the afternoon, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited the court to honor Scalia. They were greeted by Chief Justice John Roberts and then met with members of Scalia's family, including Army Lt. Col. Matthew Scalia, the late justice's son, and his wife, Michelle, in the Solicitor General's office.

The President and first lady stayed for roughly 25 minutes

what a fucking monster. i heard he grabbed scalia's wife's ass and told his son to go fuck himself. then he wiped his mouth with a napkin that had the 2nd amendment written on it in crayon and told chief justice roberts to shove it up his ass.

it's just what i hear people saying about what happened.

Who the fuck was Scallia... Other than some asshole that used his position to try to fuck minorities over and institute religious rule. People, myself included, don't respect him because he's undeserving of our respect. I'm glad Obama is throwing this amount of shade at that scumbag.

I get this uneasy feeling that there's some big reason why he won't be there, and none of us will like it when we find out.
My sense is this has to do with US Chinese relations.

You magnificent bastard. Well done.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest:
Obama skipping Scalia's funeral because of "security footprint", will be reviewing Supreme Court candidates instead

Josh Earnest, Obama's White House Press Secretary, said the president will spend a significant portion of his weekend reviewing individuals who 'may be worthy of consideration'.

'I would expect the president will spend a significant portion of his weekend digging into those materials,' he added.

Earlier today Obama and Michelle paid their respects at the Supreme Court as Justice Antonin Scalia's body lay in repose.

The president then spoke during a Democratic Governors Association Meeting, in which he told a group of Democratic governors he will press voting rights this year.

Earnest said on Thursday the president would be skipping Scalia's funeral on Saturday because of his 'security footprint'.

Announcing the president's plans to attend the Friday ceremony but not following day's funeral, Earnest said: 'I can tell you that Vice President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden will attend Justice Scalia's funeral at the Basilica on Saturday.'

'Vice President Biden, who is somebody that had his own personal relationship with Justice Scalia and his family, will be representing the administration at the funeral,' he said.

'Obviously, when the Vice President travels someplace, his security footprint is at least a little bit lighter.'

The President wouldn't commit on Tuesday to putting a moderate on the court and urged Senate Republicans promising to filibuster his nominee, whoever he or she may be, to fulfill their constitutional responsibility to confirm or deny his pick.

Dirtying the waters of the nomination process is Obama's own filibuster as a senator of George W. Bush appointee Samuel Alito.

'That is an approach the president regrets,' Earnest said Wednesday.

Obama now wishes he'd followed the advice in 2006 that he's giving to Republicans, he said, and Democrats had made a 'public case' against Alito.

'They shouldn’t have looked for a way to just throw sand in the gears of the process,' he acknowledged.

In these times, it's a circus for the President to go anywhere and a security nightmare. Everyone at the event is subject to the highest security measures. I'm sure the Secret Service doesn't mind him not going. Best for him to pay his respects in the more easily controlled environment of the court chambers. Most of Scalia's friends want Obama dead.

Eisenhower went to Vinson's funeral, despite Vinson being a Democrat. Bush went to Rehnquist's. Both were sitting justices. That should be enough precedent for Obama.

There were no security concerns during Eisenhower's time.

Renquist was a conservative and Bush the lesser was delivering the eulogy. Cheney was running the country and Dubya was just a puppet.

Oh, I'll bet he does. I'm generally against filibustering as a practice, but there would be some poetic justice if this were to happen. On the other hand just because O chose to utilize this shit practice when it suited his purposes doesn't mean the opposition should sink to that level. Though, they will. They all will. O just doesn't really have a leg to stand on for being overly critical of it in this case if he was party to doing precisely that to Bush...

O paying his respects the way he did is an equitable solution though. Makes sense when you consider it in terms of what a pain in the ass presidential security would be.

I heard obama was gonna meet with some BLM member tho

President Barack Obama will not attend Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's funeral on Saturday, the White House says.

The president and first lady will instead pay their respects on Friday while Scalia lays in repose at the high court.

'I can tell you that Vice President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden will attend Justice Scalia's funeral at the Basilica on Saturday,' White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said.

It was not immediately clear why the president won't go to the formal funeral.

'I don't have a sense of what the president's plans are for Saturday,' Earnest said after a reporter suggested it would be bad form for him to go golfing, a favorite weekend activity of Obama's.

The White House official had few details on the executive branch's involvement in the funeral proceedings. He could not say whether the vice president would give a eulogy.

When active Supreme Court Chief Justice Justice William Rehnquist passed away in 2005, then-President George W. Bush attended the ceremony and gave a tribute to the judge.

hi Arkain2k,

i don't see what the big deal is, to be honest...

...President Obama probably wasn't a huge fan of Justice Scalia or his rulings, so he's not going.

of course, attending the funeral would be the politically correct thing to do - but the POTUS clearly isn't bound by the conventions of political correctness in this case.

for all the fans of non-PC gestures (of which there are many in this forum), i find it odd that folks aren't cheering the President's decision.

Maybe Obama thought about going then realized he'd probably benefit more by going to a less rigorous and slower paced, funeral.

This is one of those things where people are just looking for an excuse to get their panties in a bunch. I'm not a big supporter of President Obama but he was damned either way by thw right wing media. You can bet if he showed up some would criticize him for trying to steal the spotlight o politicizing the funeral.

It's a nonissue. He paid his respects earlier this week and, despite their deepseated political differences, had a lot of nice things to say about Scalia. Biden is Catholic, like Scalia, and has a personal relationship with Scalia's family. Only one of them can attend. It's a funeral. It's supposed to be personal, not political. that makes Biden the better choice to go.

There's legitimate shit to criticize Obama for. Trying to act like his is one of those things is stupid.

Maybe he's going to Randlemans funeral instead and just doesn't wanna be transparent about it.

You know this how?

Answer a question for me if you like. Is there one thing that Obama did during his 7 years that you liked?

Obama recognized that it is not wage differentials but currency manipulation causing the balance of payments problems and the loss of domestic production jobs. I will give Obama that, most people on the right and left don't even know what that is even though it is only 300 level stuff.

Lol no security concerns for the president during Eisenhower's time? Do you have any substantiated proof for that? I mean. during that time there was a big ass country in Europe/Asia that didn't take so kindly to the US. Let me guess, there weren't security concerns during McKinley's time or Garfield's time or Lincoln's time either?

Honest questions, have you ever read the constitution? Do you understand the different methods of interpreting it? Which Scalia opinions make him a scumbag? Which parts of those opinions don't at least make sense in regards to constitutionality?

Disagree with his interpretation of the constitution all you want, but calling him all sorts of names because of his interpretations makes it seem like you don't understand basic concepts of constitutional law.

Yes and yes. And yes, Scallia was a shameful addition to the Supreme Court, a bigot and someone interested in promoting Christianity through his seat of power. He did a lot of harm in this world and kept a lot of people from enjoying the rights the deserve. And now he can't. It's really that simple. I think it's you that doesn't understand why him and people like him are such a scourge on this country.
