So, i've seen this thread in a famous brazilian BJJ forum and thought it'd be nice to bring it to sherdog. It's pretty simple. White belts should come here and share their experiences or ask for advice, etc.

I started praticing BJJ last week and today was my 4th training session. I was caught on triangles a few times trying to pass my partner's closed guard today. The guy explained to me that i should try to pass both of my arms under my partner's legs in a single movement, otherwise my remaining arm would create an opportunity for my opponent to choke me. Although i'm just a begginer i can feel that i get better as time goes by, and i can fix some problems in my game.

both arms in or both arms out!

Mea culpa, sometimes I'm guilty of baiting the triangle against someone who keeps shutting down my passes, so I can use what Ryan Hall calls the "Roger Gracie defense" in his Triangle videos, or the stepping over defense, to get past their damned guard. This is only usually when they have consistently shut down my passes enough that I just go "fuck it" and I know the odds are good for me pulling it off though haha.

Instead of pulling arms out open up your elbows and push with your shoulders forward to lift his hip off the ground. Only then, when you arms are completely free you can take them out.

Without that it may only work if that guy is a complete beginner. Otherwise, he will always have at least one grip either on your arm or your collar. If you try pulling arms with grip on it he will push one arm and pull another - triangle. If his hand is on the collar - you are choked once you remove hands.

I started training no-gi sub grappling three years ago and switched to full time gi bjj last year. Too bad this thread didn't exist sooner because I just got promoted to blue this week.

Good luck white belts.

Thanks for the advice. Didn't get caught on any triangles today. :)

No new positions today, only warm up and spar. I was able to work on some transitions today like, learned to go to the back from the half guard in grabbing my partner's belt, was even able to pull a rear naked choke on him. It's exciting to learn some new stuff everyday. I'm currently training at soul fighters BJJ. Pretty positive environment.
