So in the TUF reality show they have made both casts go through crazy endurance and strength tests for the 1st couple days to see where these guys are at as far as conditioning. One of the tests they put these guys to is the treadmill evaluation where they make them run...

5 minutes at level 5, and move up a level every 5 minutes for a total of 30 minutes. So they do 5 minutes at level 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and finish with 5 minutes at level 10. I tried this at the gym yesterday morning to kind of use as a guage as to where i stand cardio wise, and i only got to level 8 for 2 minutes. I also had been up late drinking tequila and beer the night before while watching UFC 57, so i think on a good day i could complete the 5 minutes at level 8 and maybe a few minutes at 9......but anyways im gonna use this evaluation to guage my cardio progress, and once i can complete the entire 30 minutes i will consider myself a cardio bad ass!!

So i was wondering if anyone else had tried this excercise and where you stand.....also is there any comments as to whether or not this is a pretty good routine to guage your cardio by? Im not talking marathon running cardio but fight shape cardio.

correct me if I'm wrong but I think they used it more to measure the heart that the fighters had. I think I recall Randy saying "Almost everyone will fail at this test, its just used to see who will go untill they cant go any more and who will just give up without giving it all they have"

not an exact quote, just paraphrased.

if you can do this then yes, you are a cardio monster

Leben is the only one who finished (I don't remember Season 2 much as it blew) and he was dead after. I assume if you can finish that, then yes, you are a cardio monster.

Didn't they also lift quite a bit before they did this? I didn't see the season 1 show of this, and vaguely remember season 2.

how would you compare 10 minutes on the treadmill to 10 minutes on the stairmaster? i do a 10 min warm up where it gets faster and faster and then drops back to slow 3 times

Yeah, in my best shape I'll do like 25 minutes in the morning (so up to 9 mph)....it is hard as hell.

He did it on a hangover as well. The guy is a sav.

I might give this a go and see how much cardio is

This is a good routine. not something to really train at, just something to try.

I'm curious for all you guys that didn't make it, how intense is your routine right now? The reason I ask is that I rarely run but this this was no problem for me and I don't have very good cardio. I did the five minutes of 10 MPH and was thinking of trying this but starting at six and going up to 11 or 12 MPH...thoughts??

i usually stretch then do it i can complete it but i am a running monster. I have more problems at like 5 6 even 7 cause its not my natural gate.

so did you complete the routine or did you just complete the 5 minutes at 10mph? Just b/c you can do the 5 minutes at 10mph doesnt mean you can complete the routine.

Karalexis finished it easily, wasn't even very winded when he was done... but he was a cardio monster on that show. Diego finished it too and was dead like Leben.

I can complete level 9, but at that point I'm exhausted so I haven't tried to attempt level 10 yet. Just the thought of bringing it up another notch gives me chills. Definitely going to try it soon.

This is a good test of your wind I usually get up to 9 but at that point I'm getting fatigued and paranoid about wiping out at that speed, which could be ugly!

i used to do this after i lifted a couple times a week and it was difficult, but you just have to tough it out. and like LPF4 said, those guys rotated stations when they did it, so some of them got to do the treadmill first, but others had to do grappling and stuff before the run which would make it very difficult. when i did it, i was running about 4 miles a day and i believe when you do the entire run, it's like 4.8 miles or something.

Unless I can't think straight it should be 3.75 miles. Over the course of running at 5,6,7,8,9 & 10 mph you are averaging 7.5 mph overall (this works because each increment is the same). Done at 30 mins and you have 3.75 miles.

I couldn't make it to ten. I gassed about a minute into 9 a few months ago.
