TLDR
-------------------------------------------------------------
My Ranking

1. GSP UFC record of 19-2
opponent win/loss of 77-45-3
9 Title defenses

2.Matt Hughes ufc record 18-7
opponent win/loss of 10-19 (boths reigns combined)
7 title defenses

3.Robbie Lawler ufc record 11-4 ( ongoing)
opponent win/loss 9-3 (ongoing)
1 Title defense ( ongoing)

4.Pat miletich UFc record of 7-2
oppenent win/loss of 2-4
4 Title defenses

5.Johny Hendricks (12-3)(ongoing)
0 title defenses

6.Carlos newton ufc record 3-4
0 title defenses

7.BJ Penn ufc record(as welterweight) 2-5-1
0 title defenses

8. Matt Sera ufc record 3-5(as welterweight)
0 title defenses

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see above I have robbie currently ranked 3rd...A win over condit will bump him up to second greatest of all time giving him an oppenent win/loss of 16-7
far more impressive then Matt hughes at 10-19 with 7 title defenses.

Thoughts?

Let him rattle off a few defenses before we start throwing him into the conversation with Hughes. He'll pass Pat, in my eyes, if he beats Condit.

no one is going to surpass GSP at welterweight.

not sure he'll pass hughes either (#2)

Easily 3rd. He's beaten amazing fighters.

Still needs to beat Hendricks seeing as quiet a few people scored the second for Hendricks.

His resume at WW in general is pretty sick and a win over Condit and another over Johnny will put him dang close to Hughes on the best WW ever list.

GSP is in a whole different ball park though he would need at least 4 or 5 more high profile wins before he even gets mentioned along side the GOAT.

Robbie is pretty damn old and he has a lot of fight miles on him already. Also the WW division is stacked so it would be very hard for him to win another 4-5 just to be mentioned alongside Hughes (though to be fair WW has been stacked for a long time now and Hughes probably had an easier run than anyone will ever have again). He will never even be mentioned in any seriousness compared to GSP though, I agree with you there.

above Newton but below everyone else just because of the length of his reign

Behind Hughes and GSP. Penn could be 3rd, but never did defend the WW title. But his LW/WW title feat is pretty amazing. So he's 3rd or 4th.

Jesus Christ, he just won the title and defended it not long ago. Come back in a few years.

80-90% scored that fight for Hendricks, that's how he ranks

As it stands right now 3rd or 4th I don't see him surpassing Matt Hughes legacy at WW.

I really have no qualms with these rankings. But...

My input:

Instead of showing defenses, you could show how many times they won the belt, ie Hughes was a 9 time champ (with 7 title defenses). It would give those fighters credit who won it on multiple occasions. Specifically adds to Hughes and GSP's reigns.

Serra had a better record than BJ at WW. We all know that BJ ranks among the greats because his accomplishments in the sport over all. But soley as a WW he had a terrible record and never defended the belt. Serra didn't do much better, but he did have fewer losses and beat the No. 1 WW of all time rather than the No. 2.

Lastly, there's no way to really account for the quality of opposition each champ faced during their run. Unless maybe instead of showing the overall WW record of the challengers, you showed what there record was at the time of the title fight. Because we know that different fighters ended up falling off at the end of their runs and what they ended up with (record-wise) isn't where they were at when they were at the top.

Just sayin'

Otherwise, agree with your analysis.
