I just saw the ESPN special and now that some time has passed, maybe we can assess him objectively. I have him behind Brown, Payton, Emmitt Smith and ahead of just about everyone else. It is a little hard to evaluate him because he played on a shit team and that cuts both ways. He probably picked up some easy yards playing against prevent defenses when they were way behind but he also didn't have the advantage of a team with other offensive tools to distract the defense. We also really didn't get to see him play under the pressure of playoff games.
Also - I wonder if his subconscious rage was partly the product of being exiled to Buffalo all those years or may have been a result of concussions.
When you measure him up against Brown, he really falls short not only as a player but also as a movie actor. Brown was a legit star in some major movies (The Dirty Dozen) - Simpson never really got to that level and was mostly known as a Hertz pitch man although he was really good in the Naked Gun movies. Again the Brown comparison may have gotten him pissed off.

One of the quickest first cuts I've seen. One he got going he could carve up any defense.

Emmitt Smith

Emmitt Smith is a can. Shouldn't be even mentioned in the same sentence as OJ

OJ was part of a 4x100 WR setting relay team in college.

Emmitt Smith - LMAO.

Smith isn't even top 5.

A big question is - peak value versus career value. These can be very different. I would put Smith lower on peak value but higher on career value. It's like comparing Sandy Koufax and Warren Spahn.

Wherever people have Eric Dickerson and Thurman Thomas -- he's below that.

On par with Shaun Alexander?

Dickerson is way better then Smith. Not even close.

I have him the same as Curtis Martin. Alexander's career didn't last long enough.

Below Marcus Allen.

Come at me Cowgirls.

You have him above Barry Sanders?

OJ wasted a lot of his practice time looking for the real killers. Got to give him extra points for that.

I put him behind only a couple. A.P., maybe Gale Sayers.

He was amazing.

I thought it said blacks instead backs for a sec

He had maybe the best rushing season ever. Breaking 2000 in 14 games is nuts. He though only had like 5 good seasons so I would put him below a lot of backs.

Emmitt Smith
