I just saw the ESPN special and now that some time has passed, maybe we can assess him objectively. I have him behind Brown, Payton, Emmitt Smith and ahead of just about everyone else. It is a little hard to evaluate him because he played on a shit team and that cuts both ways. He probably picked up some easy yards playing against prevent defenses when they were way behind but he also didn't have the advantage of a team with other offensive tools to distract the defense. We also really didn't get to see him play under the pressure of playoff games.
Also - I wonder if his subconscious rage was partly the product of being exiled to Buffalo all those years or may have been a result of concussions.
When you measure him up against Brown, he really falls short not only as a player but also as a movie actor. Brown was a legit star in some major movies (The Dirty Dozen) - Simpson never really got to that level and was mostly known as a Hertz pitch man although he was really good in the Naked Gun movies. Again the Brown comparison may have gotten him pissed off.
