I think you have to really judge his career pre ufc and put that guy on a list with Khabib, Aoki, bj, tony, frankie, Chandler, Benson, RDA, Eddie, Ceronne..etc....where would you put Gomi. is he top 10? top 5? not top 10?

    6,7,8ish?

Penn really f'd his legacy up, so id have khabib, alvarez, henderson, and BJ before 2010/2011 ahead of 'em, but it's really cluttered. RDA, Aoki, Melendez are somewhere in the clusterfuck.

That's kinda what I meant by clusterfuck :) But yeah, he's anywhere 5-15. It's hard to REALLY place them definitively outside the top 3-4. Connor is about #15, breaks top 5-10 if he had actually defended.

Khabib is #1 based on domination, Penn would be #1-3 if he stopped fighting in like 2011, it's easy to place Alvarez, Henderson, Edgar after them, but that's probably where it's gonna start to be difficult.

    GOMI/ RDA/ MELENDEZ/ PETTIS/ AOKI/ FEGUSON / PORIER / CERRONE / MAYNARD / CONOR -- I could jumble those around quite a bit based on who has done what.

15-20 range maybe. Last decade of his career brings him way down. One of the bigger UFC busts, probably even worse than Cro Cop's UFC run. You can't ignore the run he had in Shooto and Pride. Still I'd say he's been surpassed by a few names through the years in the all time rankings.

Same thing as with BJ: the longer you stick around past your prime and take those hard L's, the more you damage your legacy.

Gotta remember the dude also had 37 or 38 fights when he finally hit the UFC.

    *31-5-1 just checked*

Him in 2004/2006 was a pretty bad ass LW.

It's hard for people to understand nowadays because his fall from grace happened SO fast and so damn hard, but in his era he was phenomenal.

He ALWAYS had the weakness to being taken down and beaten, but his boxing and sprawl were superb in their time; he was one of the first and only guys you'd see actively stifle takedown attempts with uppercuts and pivots.

Again, everything after Pride was pretty bad, but his body of work from 2004-2005 was magical, especially the final run of beating Kawajiri and Sakurai (both of whose accomplishments aren't appreciated now either).

You can't really rate him all time because the level has risen so much since then, but he is top 3 of the "Old Era" and a trailblazer for the current generation.

Random side note, I WISH we could have seen Gomi vs Joachim Hansen; that was my dream fight of that era.
