When you became a real MMA fan

2003

My old man was very good at rigging DirecTV boxes with modified cards that would get all the channels, including PPV and overseas stuff. He would put on UFC and PRIDE FC events in the house and we'd all watch em.

Weird....Exactly the same for me. Same year, same deal with the Directv box with the modified "football" card.

I had watched a few UFCs prior to that but Total Elimination 2003 was when I became hooked.

When I saw video of Silva's double leg break in 2013 on YouTube. Started following seriously in 2016

The moment I saw Gordeau kick the teeth out of Teila Tuli.

Well, I originally joined this forum to discuss the first Cormier vs. Jones fight, but I was a pretty hardcore fan long before that.

Just like the rest of Sherdog I’ve obviously been watching since UFC 1 which inspired me to get my BJJ BB and fight pro MT in Thailand in the 265 12% body fat 6’5 division...

But the first big fight that I remember really looking forward for and betting on was Tito vs Chuck 1, at this time I knew a little about pride fighters, Royce Gracie and other general knowledge, still noob status

I watched the first season of Ultimate Fighter and ofcourse was one of the many people who really tuned in for the Forest Griffin Bonner fight, that was when I would say I started watching it religiously and became a real fan who watched every PPV

My geek out on MMA era was when GSP, Anderson Silva and Aldo were ontop and seemed unbeatable.

post yours!

As every sherdogger, I used to practice MMA even before MMA ever existed (though at that time, it was jeet kune do, Wrestling and BJJ a once/twice a week and on Fridays was sparring (all together).

So one of these days, I heard some guys talking about the "pride" thing. I checked out and the first event I watched was Pride 27: Inferno.
The card was stacked:
Mirko Cro Cop def. Ron Waterman TKO (Soccer Kicks)
Heath Herring def. Gan McGee Decision (Split)
Yoshihisa Yamamoto def. Mark Kerr TKO (Punches)
Kazuhiro Nakamura def. Alberto Rodriguez Decision (Unanimous)
Murilo Rua def. Alexander Otsuka Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke)
Sergei Kharitonov def. Cory Peterson Submission (Armbar)
Igor Vovchanchyn def. Dan Bobish TKO (Punches)

After that, I was hooked!

You not a real MMA fan until your favorite fighter gets KOed, multiple times.

It's funny to me how Crocop isn't the enemy to me given how he violently killed vovchanchyn and Wand.

While I always fucking hated Anderson Silva for KOing Carlos Newton.

...whatever my boy Noggers armbarred the fuck out of him and got it back.

for TS, um, I donno I found PrideFC and saw guys like Sakuraba and knew I was home. I always loved martial arts since watching Steven Segal movies as a kid.

For me it was watching Fedor fight way back in Japan. His calm demeanor and respectfulness juxtaposed with sheer cold domination just changed my whole idea of what MMA could be.

Yep the same ones!

I've always watched since it started because my dad bought all the PPV's. But after seeing PrideFC in 2000, I was addicted.

always watched when i could, got real hooked in 06 when you could watch fights on like 3-4 different channels along with pirating fights

Loved the vhs rented from blockbuster days and seeing Tank Abbott and all the specialists fight across disciplines.

Peak interest level was probably around the time Rampage and Chuck fought in the ufc in 2007ish through GSP and Fitch fighting in 08.

Wow now that was a card!!

btw is it just me or does it look like all the conor McGregor fans are hiding behind their first year university homework right now ?

When the wmma fappening happened...oh, mma fan. Misread it.

LOL!
That got me by surprise (laughed so hard my son came to see what happened) :D

But that's the thing! Those were the normal cards we were used to see.

Granted, it was one event every couple of months.
But now a days, we are lucky to see one great fight, let alone a card stacked top to bottom like that!

besides, with great cards every couple of months, it built expectative, it allowed us to talk about the event and discuss the match ups, etc.
Now every week we have at least one card, and there isn't much time to even miss MMA.

To be completely honest, many times now I watch a card mostly because I am used to it and not because I feel excited for a specific fight/matchup.

I'm the guy who beat your fucking ass in your MT fight in Thailand because I am 6'7" 268 with 7% body fat. That means I started watching waaaaaay before UFC 1. Like Rickson Street fight era type shit. Fuck, maybe even Helio Gracie 1954 matches type shit.

No one has the balls to come and say the McGregor-Waldo fight.
