When was Jones prime?

When was his prime?

Physically and athleticly your prime years are early to mid 20's. Even if you factor in experience and knowledge gained as you train/fight you could only realistically push it back to maybe like 28 or 29 (and that is very generous).

No reasonable person who knows anything would argue anything other than his prime was in his past.
Prime in mma is different due to the skills and mental maturity required. Literally every top MMA fighter is in their 30's.

No it isn't.

Top MMA fighters are in their 30's because the talent pool in MMA is incredibly small so older fighters can still be successful. There are not hundreds of elite level 20 years olds coming into the sport every year like in other bigger sports.

there is also survivor bias. The top guys are still good at in their 30's because they are the top guys. They were already better than everyone else so they will take longer to decline. They are the exception, not the rule.

You are ignoring all the other guys who didn't make it into there 30s. They were out of the sport long before that.

It's like saying 35 year olds are still above avg NBA players because LeBron is. Or that all 19 year olds can play in MLB because Bryce Harper could.

I understand survivor bias, but that's the case if I use one guy as an outlier. EVERY top mma fighter is in their 30's, not just a few. Survivor bias would be if I said you're in your prime in your 40's because of Cormier, yoel, and hendo.

He’s right on the cutoff IMO. Think Fedor circa 2009; Jones is in that kind of territory.

Okay so 80% here have no clue whatsoever about the sport. Good to know LOL

It almost seems like JJ is the only cheater, when reading these posts.

Of course Yoel Romero, GSP and many others are 100% god-fearing natties compared to Jon Jones.

Fucking manchilds<{cruzshake}><{hughesimpress}><36>
I don’t think you understand how many people on here believe GSP is on steroids despite having never failed a test. But yet the same people see Jon’s multiple failed tests and pulsing escapades as evidence of his innocence.

Dude Shogun was ranked like fifth in the division like two years ago, and he is absolutely shot to bits, and was even then.

I'm not saying that every light heavyweight from the past would be competitive, but to say that none of them would is nonsense. The prime versions of Shogun and Machida handle guys like Reyes and Santos just fine.

Not 10 years into his UFC career.

He started so young so that even though he's only 32, he's now more like 36+. He's gradually slowing down.

show me their MULTIPLE failed tests or even one failed test, oh you can't? and jones set the record for failed tests? huh, weird.

lmao you tried.
You'd need glasses if you'd seriously compare St-Pierre to Romero in terms of muscularity anyway.
Georges St-Pierre was slightly under 190 pounds or so when he entered the cage, while Romero was 211 pounds against Costa.. at 41 or 42 years of age as well.

It's different. When players enter NBA, they've had so much basketball practice and typically from a much earlier (and thus better) age so that their skills are much closer to being maxed out at 18. Meanwhile guys enter MMA typically in their 20s and are nowhere near their skill ceilings. It is estimated to take 10,000 hours of practice to maximise your potential in an athletic field and most MMA guys aren't even close to that.

If MMA guys actually started training MMA at age 7 then you'd expect them to max out in their mid-20s, but that's just not the case.

2020 Bones >>> 2012 Bones

It's not even that close

Anyone who knows the game can see that Jon's boxing in particular is light years ahead of where it was earlier in his championship run, and his fight IQ is significantly higher too

From about 32 onward is when the physical decline starts though, so the next couple of years will be intriguing as fuck for Jonny Bones

Chael Sonnen - middleweight - 6'1
Shogun - could've cut to middlweight - 6'1
Rampage - never in shape in ufc - 6'1
Machida - middlweight - 6'1
Rashad - fought at middleweight - 5'11
Vitor - middleweight - 6'0

Gus 6'4
Reyes 6'5
DC Olympic wrestler
Anthony Smith 6'4
Santos 6'2
OSP 6'3

Can you see the size pattern?

Fixed

Chael likely 6ft flat
Shogun likely 6ft flat too
Machida a weak 6ft
Rashad a tall 5"10
Vitor a short 5"11 or tall 5"10

Jones is still in his Prime. For a guy who fights once a year, he is amazing. He has fought some tough guys and is winning fights.

Yeah, see point one about the talent pool.

And even if you use 100 guys it's still survivor bias. You are looking at only the guys who survived the age threshold. The vast majority don't.
