When is a martial art related tattoo too soon?

Also wait until purple since most people burn out at blue.

Blue are like newbie gains in lifting, the moment when you stall and need to put some serious effort and brain into it to keep progressing.

This.

I told myself I would get an octopus tattoo when I got purple. Well I got it, now I'm just waiting to find a good artist.

Well, it's definitely not my first hard martial art, but it's definitely something I can see myself doing for a while! But yeah, when I get my purple or maybe even brown, I'll consider getting a tattoo related to BJJ. Some dudes be acting all homophobic against their own sport, smh

No, it's not going to be two shirtless dudes grappling, lol. Nothing's set in stone yet, but consistently the notion of waiting for a higher rank is being brought up so I'll probably just wait. I'm not rushing for one anyway! Got plenty of non martial-art related tats in the works.

It has more to do with spending time with your hobby to decide whether you actually enjoy the hobby beyond what you're doing right now or not.

When you are ready to stop getting laid, you are ready for a grappling tattoo.

She won't see it until you're already naked.

Unless it's a grappling face tattoo. Then you're too dumb to be saved, and it's probably for the best that you'll never reproduce.

Getting a tattoo that 99% of people will interpret as detailed imagery of man-love is a bold and progressive move.

I'd have to agree with this. Most people just won't get it. I'd try for a different design.
On when to get it, I'd say when you no longer care wheather other BJJ practitioners approve or not.

I would say purple or when you stop giving a fuck.

Why is it that people here get so into BJJ that they make it into something important? Especially when they've only done it for a year or so?

I just don't understand. Is it because that's the first time they did some sort of "hard" sport and they love it? Did they miss out on camaraderie somehow? I don't get it.
Have you ever done anything that changes your life in very significant way? Only then you'd understand.

Well, that was exactly what he asked.
No one would get a tattoo of an activity that they have only been doing for one year.
He wondered why people did not any more significant in life apart than one year of taking classes of BJJ.

Have you ever done anything that changes your life in very significant way? Only then you'd understand.

Yes I did. Judo. It motivated me to become far more physically active and actually appreciate my body as a machine that should be taken care of.

But I am questioning how you know for certain that something you only did for a year or less is going to become a very important part of your life.

There are many things that change our lives in a very significant way. I've experienced multiple such things in just the last 2-3 years alone.

I am questioning how its possible that your life is so void of experiences that experiencing bjj becomes so memorable that you want to devote your entire life to it, such as that fellow who decided that he wants to train bjj full-time after only a couple of months of training.

I realize the OP isn't saying that, but most people I know personally who get tattoos get them because they represent something deeply personal or dear to them. I don't know how bjj can become something like that after only a year.

Maybe Because BJJ attracts wackos and encourage cult building.

Dont base your choice on belt-level, just ask yourself if jits is a, permanent, part of your life or not?

It would, however, be kinda lame to end up getting a permanent "fighting" marker and then quit after 18 months of training.

Seems to be alot of threads on this from time to time, treat it like any other tattoo, if you can stand for it, get it!

I have trained for 8 years now, first 4 years very hard then 12-18 months no training b/c acl-surgery etc. then 3 years averaging once or twice per week because of law-school and full time work. All being said, im still a blue belt. Lack of local blackbelts, bad knees and just life overall has kept me from being promoted (some people i started traing with are at black belt now:( ). Despite being a blue belt, I would say that jits is a permanent part of my life.In fact, friends, family, girls, pets and porn has all changed in 8 years, jits is still there.

Just get yourself a tribal tattoo on your arm that you can show off to everyone.

On a serious note, if you are in doubt then it's too early and you aren't ready for it yet. A lot of people overcomplicate it. If you really want it and ready for it - just go and do it. It's your life, your body. Just make sure to find a good master.

People will assume your a real badass at jiu jitsu cause you have a tatoo of it. But in reality you only have a year. Maybe you want people to think your a badass. You my friend are considered a Poser. Dont do it dude your still new to bjj. Wait till you get a black belt.

Im seriously considering getting some kind of Judo related tat next to or over/around the scar from my ankle surgery (a gift from Judie!) Not sure how/if the scar tissue will take the ink though, so I'll have to get creative...

My scar tissue took ink fine. A good artist will know how to draw the attention away from the area of the scar making it not noticeable

3 people from out gym just gots gym tattoos after one of our pro fighters had his Aussie title fight. One was a white belt, the other a blue and then purple. I wouldnt before Blue. Imagine you quit the rest of your life you would bummed out looking at it.

If i ever get my blue belt ill just get a small black triangle under my wrist. (my favourite technique) but 4.5 years in and many injuries and lay offs i doubt it.

As something of an relationship wreck myself, I can't imagine people being worse than me.

So the idea that people find such incredible meaning and relationship from BJJ to the point that they consider it an important part of them after only a year of training or less disturbs me.

Especially since this is fundamentally a rich person's sport, at least in the U.S. Paying anywhere from 100-200 USD a month for a hobby? Good God. I must be insane.
