I have a BJJ tournament approaching this weekend (in 6 days time), and I'm a little torn as to how to approach winding down my training before the tournament day. I want to be as fresh as possible physically, but also want to take into consideration of keeping my flow and technique at its peak. I thought I'd get some input from the fellow grapplers here on how they approach their training regimen right before a tournament (ie training right up until the event, resting X amount of days before the event... etc).

I know it will probably be of very little consequence no matter how I approach it, but I'm in a rather unique position which I haven't been in before. My cardio has never felt better, technique feels at an all time high, and I'm free of any considerable injuries/sickness etc. Every tournament I've competed at in the past, it's always been something little that's prevented me from being 100% (having a cold, injured etc etc); I know it's common to not be 100% when competing, but this time I feel on top of everything (as much as I can be, anyways). I'm probably going to roll tonight at full speed, then just drill technique the next few nights and completely rest 2 days before hand; but I'd like to hear how you guys approach training right up until the day of an event.

Assuming the tournament is on Saturday I would train pretty hard Monday and Tuesday but be mindful of not getting injured. I would then wind down and go light Wednesday and Thursday. No full sparring Thursday for sure just flow rolling and/or drilling. I wouldn't do anything on Friday other than make sure you eat a good meal and make sure my weight is on point. Get lots of rest Thursday night and Friday and you should be in good shape come Saturday.

Hey what tournament? I'm competing this weekend too.

Take the last few days light. Rep technique, break a sweat, but no hard rolling. Keep the diet clean.

Thanks for the input!

"The Revolution" tournament in Bonney Lake, WA. Put on by Liberty Events and Promotions.

Train hard Monday through Thursday. Train hard Friday morning, or drill and get a good sweat in Friday evening. Its a jiu jitsu tournament, not an MMA fight, don't be a pussy

I'll be there too, repping Gracie Barra. Blue belt, meio pesado. Good luck guys!

Nice. Our team is heading down from BC, Gracie Barra Vernon club. I'll be in the blue belt, mens 141-154 and intermediate no gi 135-149 divisions. Good luck out on the mats!
