When discussing best wrestlers in MMA, Aldo should be one of the first to come up

I was randomly thread surfing today and came across a few "Best Wrestler in MMA" threads. Most were made a year or two ago. I don't remember seeing "Jos

As time goes on we will slowly leave that brand of thinking "styles" and labels. Remember 2002-2007 Mma when every fighter had a title like "wrestler" and "striker"

Aldo's wrestling is phenomenal considering the wrestlers he has faced in the past. The reason he isn't mentioned in wrestling conversations is because people tend to primarily view Jose as a striker. His defensive wrestling is top-notch.
I just wished Jose showed off those BJJ black belt skills.

The UFC has never really seemed big on promoting Jose Aldo they way they have other Brazilians. It's really unfortunate because he's absolutely up there in terms of nearly every facet of modern MMA.

self-promoting is a facet of modern MMA

Aldo appreciation thread? IN

Aldo is seriously underrated around here. Personally I've considered him the p4p best for a long time now. Absolutely world class in every facet of the game.

The problem is, in my opinion, that MMA is still evolving at such an incredible pace that it's difficult to say who is the best striker or who is the best wrestler. For example, some striking techniques that are considered amateurish at best when it comes to pure striking competitions can work in MMA due to the small gloves, threat of a takedown and the different positions found in MMA compared to those striking sports. That's why even the greatest technical strikers are sometimes outstruck in MMA. Silva vs Weidman comes to mind as an example. Weidman's pressure, the threat of a takedown and his compact stance allowed him to go toe to toe with Silva and even knock him out. Not saying Weidman has poor striking, he is amazing obviously, but Silva's fundamentals and credentials are far superior. Yet Weidman outstruck him.

What I'm trying to say is that Aldo might not have the best technical wrestling in MMA, but it's certainly one of the most efficient ones. I would go as far as saying his defensive wrestling is unparalleled. He is also fast enough to catch most guys with his offensive wrestling, but I don't know enough about wrestling to start analyzing his technique there. As for his striking; there might be more efficient strikers in MMA (whether it's due to more precision or strength or the willingness to take risks, I don't know) but I'd argue that he is very near the top when it comes to technique and fundamentals. They are textbook MT. But like I tried to explain in the previous paragraph: that doesn't necessarily make him the best striker in the game. For me, it certainly makes him the most fun to watch.

No, he shouldn't because his elite TDD is more a function of his sharpness, footwork and pivoting. Not features you associate with the best wrasslers.

Looks good on paper but I think he's over rated in this department.

Mendes wanted no part of Aldo standing in the first fight and in the second he barely tried to get him down.

He's a horrible match up striking wise for Edgar. A guy who uses lots of footwork vs a guy who is a leg kick specialist - it doesn't get any worse than that. Penn was a better match up for Edgar on the feet because he's a lazy guy who doesn't like movement.

Agreed.

The reason you don't see his name brought up as much is because he rarely uses his wrestling offensively.

As Goldie would say, "Very Chuck-like is Aldo. He's using his wrestling in reverse, Joe."

When people think of great wrestlers, they think of people completing TD's; Jones throws, GSP's doubles, Cormier ragdolling people.

Aldo does have good take downs, but really it's his defence that shines. It's really second to none... "Almost BJ Penn like, Joe, in his ability to not be taken down."

Aldo is one of those fighters who people wont realise how good he actually was until he's retired.

His wrestling defense isn't even wrestling most of the time.

He's a bjj fighter, and uses mostly footwork to evade takedowns, like pivoting. Of course he uses classic TDD techniques, like using the cage, underhooks, whizzer but he's a great Anti-wrestler more so. He does have good wrestling technique, he took down Lamas, Hominick, KZ and reversed Florian but if we're talkin stylistically he's a bjj fighter with great anti-wrestling rather than a wrestler. Mostly semantics but whatever.

had to be posted even though TS already mentioned it

Gotta agree TS. He's freaking amazing. He's up there with the best all time in terms of overall skill set.

Anti wrestler

Pretty sure Mendes and Edgar are better wrestlers than Aldo. And they arent even being considered. So... no

Stuffing TD's and taking down Hominick is a lot easier than taking down Aldo, Benson, Maynard, and BJ Penn.

Your logic is bad and you should feel bad.
