I've been watching some old ass Vale tudo tournaments and UFC fights, and since I'm so used to nowadays where every fight starts off with a glove touch (and if it doesn't you're a dickhead), I was wondering when glove touches actually became a regular thing in mma. If anyone knows please lemme know, thx

We always did it in tae kwon do so it must go way far back

Donno. I think glove touches should happen pre fight and after not during.

but it's their life whatever.

only time i remember a fighter waving it off was jens pulver.

i mean theres been fighters who have faked a glove touch and delivered a blow. personally i'd want before and after not during.

Guys like rockhold tell them to put their hands down for no glove touch during the fight

It's a sign of respect and sportsmanship.

I'd imagine boxing would be a good guess.

In traditional martial arts bowing was the equivalent to the modern day glove touching. That might even predate boxing?

It was the great-grandfathers of Yair and Korean Zombie, legend has it they were practicing Vale Tudo in Mexico or Korea or whatever and came up with the best techniques for hugs and glove touches.

On a more serious note:
Interesting thread. I have no clue where it originated though.

Is a old tradition in BJJ (slapping hands), Muay Thai, Boxing and several other martial arts that naturally translated to MMA/Vale Tudo, since fighters already had that habbit. In Judo for instance, fighters bow before the fight, wich is the japanese equivalent of slapping hands, I guess.

It's a sign of respect and sportsmanship.

Beat me by a few secs, but pretty much this. Funny how similar our responses came out.

How many UFC fighters got starched after doing a fake glove touch?

What about cloth touching

AKA touching cloth?

it's nice to see the tradition in other combat sports, but MMA should get rid of it. the threat of a takedown, there will always be some douchebags taking advantage of this. just look at Bellator this last weekend

i've never noticed him do that but thats cool.

seems like something you should be able to tell anothers team from locker room to locker room pre fight.

even having to wave off a glove touch during a bout just makes you look like a dick even if you already did it pre fight and i'd imagine being annoyed.
