Media What's the truth behind firing Mike Goldberg??🎙️😁

Mike objectively sucked, but his chemistry with Joe is unmatched. That's where his value was, damn it!
I really don't care that he was "dumb" or "didn't know about MMA" what am I a retard? I need some fucking nerd on the mic trying to sound smart? I know what the fuck is going on. Just talk enthusiastically and Goldie was the fucking GOAT

Goldie was a fight fan - he just didnt understand the wtf was going on technically. But at that time, I was grappling back in '97 but all my boxing/football buddies had no comprehension of "he just needs to get that left leg over and grab the underhook....." while drinking their beers trying to stay fired up. Goldy kept that fire lit.

Goldy -Keeper of the Flame
He had decent understanding of certain aspects of the game, not grappling though you are right. But he did get the boxing part of it.
Anyway, who really gives a ff, thats what pundits are made for, he had a good voice and a good chemistry with 20 years ago rogan. To me it was good enough. I dont like those corporate stats dudes, i m watching sports ffs, its no maths lessons

IT. IS. ALLLL OVVERRRR!!!! (It wasn’t over and the ref let the fight continue)

Little Eagle soars again 🦅

Goldie was totally harmless. It’s not like there was a gold standard to live up to back then. It was all appropriate for the time, and he brought good energy to the broadcast.

If you watched Pride back then, you would have known about Ranallo and Quadros, but I never viewed them as a league above or somehow better. If anything, I thought Quadros was a bit bush league. He always said cringey shit. “These two men already have their legend!! What are they trying to prooove?!? “ lol I think that was Frye vs Takayama.

Goldie had the best and most memorable catch phrases like:

"And it's all over!"

"Virtually identical"

"Here we go!"

Whenever he messed up I usually found it funny and it added to the whole experience of watching mma.

I can't help but associate Goldie with MMA even in his absence. The commentary that came after Goldie just isn't as charming and lacks good catch phrases.

Goldberg was actually doing his job, the 3 fighters by comparison were being paid to keep them from trying to fight anymore.
True. But just like with any employed individuals in the work force, you can be doing your job but if you’re not doing a good job then your employers can release you.

I'm not the type to complain about commentating, but, can we honestly say anybody after Goldberg in the play by play role has been better?

I don't need Anik telling me about the custody battles of various fighters and I know more about fighting than he ever will, his intricate analysis will always come off as third rate. I need a guy to hype and sometimes goof up in his pronunciations. Mauro was also very good for this.

One of my good friends who is the person IRL that I know who knows the most about MMA really likes and defends Anik and its probably the most contentious point we argue about as fans lol

LMAO for the love of God why?
Anik has the most "radio ready" voice and understands the broadcasting side of commentating (vocal control, avoiding dead air, steering commentary, etc) which are parts he's actually quite good at. He's actually gotten a lot better over the years as he's grown into a fight fan I'll admit, when they first had him on the desk I wanted to walk down to the PI and wheel kick his head off. Bisping has actually grown on me.

Anik is good for the reasons I said, but he has another 5 years of commentating before I'll consider him good. He's already way better than DC.

DC is diabolical lol. I hate how entrenched he is now

I alwayz enjoyed Goldie's color commentary & thought he did a good job.

I was actually very surprised when a good friend of mine whom I respect as a fight fan, told me that Goldie gets under his skin. After that I started noticing comments like that quite a lot from otherz & here on teh dog.

I still don't get it, but I felt at the time of his firing that there was more to it behind the scenes. Perhaps he waz a pain in teh ass to work with, an addict of some kind or demanded too much money or something.

“I didn’t want to leave. I was honored to go there but I didn’t want to leave [UFC],” Goldberg said of his WWE offer on JAXXON PODCAST. “I’d been in Casino Magic enough times, man. I ate at the Crackerbarrel in Kenner, Louisiana enough. I wanted to see — this beautiful yacht, the WWE, had already poured it all over the world. Our yacht was still in the water but you knew we were getting really close to a cool-ass island. Probably owned exclusively by the Fertittas but it was gonna be great.

“Joe on that Monday night goes, ‘’Goldie,’ you’re not gonna leave me to go do porn, are you? You’re not gonna do porn,’” he continued. “I’m like laughing, and Dana did the math and he said, ‘Keep in mind, ‘Goldie,’ you’ll do 52 shows with them. So, we’re gonna pay you this much per show.’ It was less money at the time but then we doubled our shows. Joe literally also was a big proponent at the time. The show was at the Hard Rock, he went up to talk to Dana and Lorenzo and he said, ‘I love ‘Goldie,’ he’s my guy. We’ve got great chemistry, don’t mess with it. Don’t let him go.’”

“The sale still bums me out,” Goldberg said. “I think I was one of the pieces that should have continued but it’s not for me to decide. People know what we’ve gone through but I’m not gonna be a f*cking whiner about it. Nobody wants to hear that because that just brings ya down to anybody else’s level.

“Obviously, I was smashed. I was heartbroken,” he concluded. “I helped build that product. It just became a time where I wanted to keep on the voyage and I’m glad I did because I saw the world in my days with the UFC.”

While his separation from UFC wasn’t ideal, Goldberg holds no ill will toward anyone. Between his bosses, White and Fertitta, Goldberg admits there isn’t much of a relationship with either in 2024. That doesn’t mean things are on bad terms. At least he doesn’t believe so.

“I can’t find Lorenzo now,” Goldberg said. “If you think about it, other than just a few fights, he’s just gone on to the next. If I saw him, it would be a very pleasurable conversation.

“With Dana, I don’t know, he liked to pick on me a little bit,” he continued. “I always felt like I towed the company line. If Dana said, ‘This is what we’re gonna do, we’re not gonna talk about losses.’ I never argued. I don’t know. I’d be honored to do it again and I have huge respect for Dana but who knows? I don’t think he hates me but we’re not pen pals.”

End of the Zuffa era, combined with him getting an offer from WWE and wanting to do other things. The Dana/Joe drama has been a rumor mostly perpetuated by MMA fans that need to feel like they're reading TMZ.

I agree with the point you're making, but Goldie did not dedicate himself to the sport, which is why he ended up without a job. If he had been an actual MMA guy he'd still be the voice of the UFC.
I feel an ex fighter was always gonna take his job

That's my biggest counter argument to this:

"Well he had to go because he made some mistakes durrr. "

Sorry, but that only stands to reason...IF his replacements were doing a better job.

They are not.

UFC commentary sucks
It sucks ass and I would propose it sucks every bit as much ass as it has ever sucked.

DC is a goofy company ball gargling dork. Nice guy or whatever but fucking intolerable with his company ball gargling.

Cruz, whom I respect as a competitor, is a pompous ass and does not play well with others. I'd legitimately rather dead air than listen to Cruz and Bisping argue about some trivial bullshit they thought a guy should have done but he didn't do.

Give me the guy (Goldie) who was there because he loved the job and dedicated his life to being the voice of combat sports instead of a bunch of washed old fighters who suck as much if not more just in different ways.
Dc and Rogan are intolerable

And all three of their lives went to shit after being fired. I hold WME personally responsible.
It really did, Hughes accident was a few months after getting released, Liddell seems to be doing pretty good, both Hughes and Liddell would probably be still working for the UFC had they actually showed up to work, like Forrest did. Spencer Fisher probably got it the worst though, UFC was paying for all his medical bills on top of that 5k a month.

people acting like "he messed up occasionally big deal." More like he shit the bed night after night afer night. it was wayyyy too often beyond margin of error. Noboy who fucked up that much would keep their job. People defending him just miss the him being a memecow

Personally, I think Dana didn't like him and Joe stabbed him in the back in favor of hiring his Bellator clone Jimmy Smith (who comically lasted just under a year).
It's sad that Rogan plays the "friend for life" but Goldy is just too nice a guy to see through it.
If he was such a great pal, then why hasn't he ever been on his podcast?? It just stinks when people behave like this in the workplace.
I'd love to see Joe & DC go and to never have lost Magic Mike🎙️😁
<goldie>
Man shit take. You sound like you know them personally. You def dont
