The Senate is undoubtedly the more important chamber of Congress and its 100 members wield the greatest influence on US politics after the president (and even before the SC justices). At the same time all states are represented by two members, regardless of size, population or economic contribution.

Texas, California and Florida have the same influence on US national politics as Delaware, Rhode Island and Maine. It could be argued that the multitude of small states in the North East has always helped Democrats in national politics.
