Movies What's the first R rated movie you saw as a kid

For those wondering 'Why was T2 rated R?' It's very clear with a few edits it could have been PG-13, like toning down the Judgement Day dream sequence, editing out the F-bombs, Arnold ripping off the flesh from his arm in front of Dyson, the few kills by the T-1000.

But they were quite sure the movie would be hugely profitable anyway. It shattered boxoffice records, and the residuals over the decades have been impressive.

So, pussying out on those details to get a PG-13 rating would have been inconsequential.
It was also heavily promoted to kids, despite being R-rated. That's another thing that's changed over the years. There were all sorts of toys and kid's menu tie-ins at fast food joints for T2. I don't even think they did that for "Wolverine and Deadpool".

Marketing genius.

And to this day T2 & Aliens are in my Top5 favorite movies of all time, and Predator isn't far off. I do sometimes wonder if somehow the 'You're too young to watch these movies' added to the mystique and hype I had to eventually watch them, and why practically nothing can compare to them.

Psychology is very closely used in marketing.

Our parents dropped us off to see Hooper, and we slipped under the ropes to see Animal House instead.

Too young to remember. I've been watching sci-fi/action/horror since I was really, really, little. I had no problem separating fiction from reality and loved special effects and trying to figure out how they did stuff. We're talking singing along to Disney one day, scarfing popcorn to Alien/Predator/Terminator/Robocop the next.

EDIT: Earliest I can pin down with any confidence would be seeing Robocop 2 in the theaters, and I would have still been four at the time. Pretty sure I also saw Predator 2 in the theaters, would have been five by then. Definitely saw T2 in the theaters, also five.

I think JFK in the theaters with my parents lol.

Theater with friends, Sleepwalkers. I think it was R, maybe not. Cheesy as fuck King novel turned movie.

No telling what I watched on TV that was heavily edited tho

I got sent to the principals office in Kindergarten because when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I said "The Predator" I knew I watched it at my first house when I was probably 4.

T2. And it was awesome.

Weirdly enough, it took me about five years to then watch the original Terminator. I ended up liking it even more. Two classics.

Either The Good Son or Bram Stoker's Dracula. Hard to remember though.

I think it was Robocop when I was like 6 or 7 maybe? Might have been another before it but I can't remember anything specific

I was 12 years old and terrified. My uncle took me and my older brother to the movies as a reward for mowing his lawn.

The story is as follows:

I used to go to the movies with my grandpa every Friday when I was a young Bobby. Three weeks after my 5th bday we pulled up, and my grandpa was going down the list of films that were showing. He said Pet Sematary, and I immediately wanted to see that, bc animals. My grandpa says, "But it's rated R." This held no meaning to 5 year old Bobby, I didn't know the rating system even existed. I shrugged at my grandpa, he shrugged at me.

We walk up to the ticket booth, and my grandpa asks this high school kid for two tickets for Pet Sematary. The kid looks at my grandpa, says, "But it's rated R." My grandpa looks at me, I look at my grandpa and shrug, he looks at the kid and shrugs, he looks at both of us and shrugs, and hands us our tickets.

We got our candy and soda and whatnot, hit the theater, and, as was customary, my grandpa was snoring before the trailers were even finished. I sat on the edge of my seat for the entire duration, terrified by what I saw, and after it was over he asks terrified 5 year old Bobby if I enjoyed it, and I obviously did.

So much we got back home and I announced to my grandma that we just saw Pet Sematary, and it was rated R. My grandpa was in the doghouse with my grandma and my mom for months after that, but young Bobby's life was changed forever, hardcore horror fan for life.

The End

First that I remember was An American Werewolf in London.

Jaws was the first movie that truly scared the shit out of me though. Watching Quint getting chomped has stayed with me since I was five.

Probably Brooke Shield's Endless Love (1981) when my family was watching it and I was just there at the same time.

Fun fact: This was apparently Tom Cruise's first movie role.
