What's the difference between mat tape and packing tape?

They look the same to me. I have four mat segments I plan to join together and would like to save myself from having to wait for "mat" tape to be shipped to me as long as run of the mill packing tape won't cause any problems with the mats. Thanks.

In my experience, mat tape stretches more which might help you keep the mats together (because you can pull on it width-wise as you apply it and then it comes back together when you let go, pulling the mats together). The adhesive also feels a little different and the tape, itself, also feels thicker.

mat tape doesn't seem to leave as much residue...which won't harm the mats, and I believe it is usually wider as well??
