In the mid 2000s, muay thai was the go to striking discipline in fashion. Everyone and their motehr was claiming to be a muay thai striker in the UFC with that thai plum clinch. Then slowly it faded away, now everyone, diaz bros, Conor, Mike Perry, etc are all about boxing and dem hands. Muay thai strikers are almost always sloppy brawlers in comparison. what changed?

true muay thai is art of 8 weapons..
boxing is easier to pick up, although it is an extremely complex martial art in its own.. I'd assume 80% of fighters still train mt.. and always will.. but few will ever master it in the cage.
the clinch is often attempted still btw. however escapes from the double collar tie are a normal part of defensive striking during training in modern gyms.

Are you a casual fan ts?

There's holes in Muay Thai as far as boxing technique goes and I think recently mma fighters from a boxing backround have exploited that.

Dillashaw/Barao is a good example, I know Ludwig calls his system 'Bang Muay Thai' but it definitely seems to more influenced by boxing than Muay Thai.

Also, I think for long time boxing has been ignored by most mma fighters, I assume a lot seem to think just because you train muay thai/kickboxing, you don't need to learn how to box, but punching in boxing is obviously way more advanced.

Probably sounded cooler in your head, I'd reckon.

It's not just boxing, you have more people using a kickboxing/karate type approach as well than before.

Fighters and coaches were probably sick of hearing Goldie say "muay thai 101".
