I heard this story from a friend and haven't been able to find any news of this on the web. I suspect that it may either be untrue or an exaggeration. Either way, it's not completely improbable. The story is that a few weeks ago, a friend of a friend's coworker parked his car in a parking garage at an upscale shopping area that my wife and I go to. He was boxed in by a few cars, beat up by a few guys(got a black eye) and robbed. He had a baby in his car. That's all I know. Other than carrying a gun and shooting these guys or trying to Bruce Lee them, what would you guys do? Like I said before, I don't have any more details like whether or not they were armed.

I would carry a gun, and I would fight.

What else is there to do?

Talk about it? lol

Well, carrying a gun all the time isn't really an option for many people. As this is the weapons and tactics forum, I was looking for other weapon ideas. I was thinking that a collapsible baton would be the best bet since you get decent range and you can't exactly ask your assailants to wait as you get the bat out of your trunk. Fighting two or more guys at the same time that might have weapons? I'll admit that my BJJ, judo, and muay thai isn't THAT good.

The other half of this was that I was thinking that I'd try to ram the cars, even if I would still stay boxed in. If nothing else, it would surprise them.

Very vague story but I will give it a shot. By my name it is obvious that I carry a gun and that is an easy answer. But you say other than having a gun and using martial arts. Well we are all martial artist on this site. look aroiund before you get into your car. Be aware of your surrondings. Carry some OC Spray.

The collapsable baton is a felony in California but carrying a gun registered to you is a misdemeanor for first offense. I am not aware of other states laws. Trying parking in a well lite area also,

well imho, if i was in his shoes AND if i had the chance to.. i would give them all the money in my wallet. Granted, if he was jumped that's a different story but if they boxed him in with a car i would have just said: " i will give you guys all the money i have". Hmm.. i think those kids were just looking for a person to jump..

Thanks for the responses. Of course I'd fight empty-handed if there was no other choice, but as the cliche goes, it should be a last resort. I'll look in OC spray. What's the shelf life like on most sprays and can they be kept in a hot car?

IF this story is true, I believe this guy was probably targeted because he was driving a flashy car parked in a secluded part of the garage. This shopping area is very yuppy.

in psychology there are three kinds of motivations for criminals....

monetary

personal

and psychotic...

monetary is easy.. if your in that kind of situation... they are obviously interested in your money.. so you give it to them no questions asked... if they have the money.. they're most likely not going to waste their time and energy beating you down..... a common tactic when meeting a mugger who wants your money is to throw your wallet/watch over their head and run the other way... almost all will go for the money..

and there is something to be said for being aware of your surroundings...

Best,

Kokoro

Wow, sorry to hear that about your friend's friend. They probably wanted $$$$ so the best thing to do would be to hand them all your cash right away and credit cards if they insisted and hope that is enough for them. This is what the police advise too. If I were alone, I might do something stupid (ok, there is a pretty good chance) or if I am smart, then I would run away. But with a baby in the car, they hold most of the cards.

The wise thing would have been to give my goods and let them go. If I had loved ones there, I'd fight like a maniac. And I hate to say it, while most folks would agree he was justified to shoot them if armed, he may have done better to take an ass-kicking. He'll be healed up long before he might have been done fucking around in the courts paying a lawyer tons of dough to keep his ass out of jail.

I always liked California law, a baton is a felony, but carrying a gun registered to you is a misdemeanor LOL. Isn't it great how that works.

Now to the question. Irregardless of whether it's a felony or not, I advise my folks to carry a baton, it's not like the bad guys are going to go complain (well maybe some) but they don't have your name if you leave immediately, no big deal (and especially with baby in the car) all bets are off, legal or not. That baton would be whooping some bad guys arses and if they want to complain that they tried to rob you, oh well!

I always keep a small baseball bat in my car, under the seat. If possible I would attempt to use it to defend myself.

carry a knife and take some arnis, escrima, or kali leasons to learn how to use it.

Well, carrying a gun all the time isn't really an option for many people.

Your question was for individual response, so why argue against it using the, "what many would do"?

I wouldn't care if packing heat isn't for everyone. its what I do. So there would have been two options for the attackers had it been me:

1. Get the fuck out of there and leave me alone.
2. Eat a bullet or three.

Their choice....

If I am surrounded as you described and my family is with me - I would assume based on their tactics that they are going to do harm to me and/or my family - so I die with my boots on. The first thing you do is position yourself (if possible) so that something is between you and the bad guys. That might be your car, the car door...anything. Also you want to position yourself so that only one guy can get to you at a time. Place the lead guy between you and anyone else if at all possible. If I am not carrying a weapon of any kind (which is rare) I am going to use my belt or a jacket.

The thing is in this scenario is it is low odds - most of the things you'd do to keep yourself safe are all too late at that point. Jiu-Jitsu cop is right you have to know your surroundings ALWAYS.

If I am not carrying a weapon of any kind (which is rare) I am going to use my belt or a jacket.

Would either a jacket or belt really help in combat? If so, do you know where (on the internet) I could find tactics for using either?

Hapkido teaches a lot of these techniques. You can probably find them on youtube. A belt can be VERY effective.

if I had my child there I would go nuts and start gouging peoples eyes out and doing whatever it took to fight them off.
