I've been training boxing for about 3 weeks and today I sparred for the first time. We were going for bodyshots only. I didn't do too well.

I don't mind losing a sparring session at all, but I really, really sucked. I froze completely, got bullied around the ring, and when I did pull the trigger, I threw sloppy, slow punches. About halfway through the second round I started to shut down completely, took a shot to the solar plexus soon after and that was it.

I gotta stress that I don't mind taking more shots than I give, especially at first... I just want to know that I did my best, and I didn't. Afterwards, knowing that I just froze up like that under pressure, I felt fucking terrible, I wanted to cry (didn't).

What was your first spar like?

felt very similar to the first time I was forcibly sodomized

nah jk, i started off in wushu so it was light sparring and it didn't feel like the time i was sodomized.

But yeah, it felt kind of like a hurdle none the less. I'm sure it racked my nerves a little bit....its been so long. You feel like there's pressure on you to do good....because you can't come to terms with the fact that you're a sucky fighter.

So its harder if you're young in my opinion because of the ego thing. When its something as competitive and aggressive as fighting, it's hard to put the ego down because thats what the ego is there for. Its there to make you feel invincible so you have the confidence to perform. Only problem is that if the ego is so rigid, and ur getting beaten, you fall apart.

It happens to even older people. A little annecdote if you don't mind.... My little brother for example (24) will never be good at jiu jitsu. He can't put his ego down to train properly. He used to wrestle and he did really well. But his ego is so fragile on the mat that its pathetic. He tries so hard but i tap him with little effort. I'll ask him for help to drill a new move, and he can't even let me drill because he's trying to resist.

I told my sister I was going to teach her how to do jiujitsu to submit our brother, and my dumb ass brother said he would just throw elbows. Alright sorry for the rant...I just hate my brother.

But anyways. I know this doesn't entirely pertain to you. But I just wanted to say my brother is a dumb ass.

Just remember why you are training. You are there to learn. If people already knew how to fight, we wouldn't need boxing gyms.

Hmmm, I suspect this brother was the sodomizER.

My first sparring session ever (to actually contribute to the thread) was basically like Karate point-sparring, only with only Boxing gloves. Two kids wind-milling until we both fell.

My first sparring session against someone who REALLY knew what they were doing was basically just me proving to my trainer at the time that I was willing to take a beating to learn to Box properly. Kid was a pretty well-experienced Amateur, I got hit a ton, stood toe-to-toe, got a couple good licks in, and refused to go down.

BTW - Bows, that post was gold.

Heh, thanks guys, this makes me feel better.

I'm not discouraged... It will drive me to get better. If the trainers let me, I'll be back in the ring tomorrow.

Bows, your comments on your brother DO pertain to me because I can learn from it. My ego, and being conscious of everyone in the room watching me get shredded, only made it worse. When I took the last shot, I really didn't want to fight anymore. If I had just relaxed I probably could have taken a lot more and dished a little out.

It was Muay Thai. I went in with my chin up tryin to brawl/streetfight and I got picked apart. Got a pretty good bloody nose

Try not to think of it as winning/losing when you spar. Think about what you want to work on (slipping, working your jab, footwork whatever) and then focus on how well you accomplished your goals.

I do Muay Thai and my first time sparring wasn't as bad as I expected. We did a lot of clinch work that day, drilling different techniques and then just battling for position. There wasn't actually a lot of striking so I didn't feel like I got wailed on all that badly.

We finished the class doing rotating sparring, so one guy starts and does 30 seconds with every one else. We broke into groups of 5 or 6 guys based on weight so it was a 3 minute round with a fresh guy every 30 seconds. That was pretty intense for my first time sparring but I just kept my hands up and managed to keep the damage to a minimum.

As opposed to giving your consent? hehehe...

First sparing session consisted of getting picked apart.
I enjoyed it so much I kept coming back!

My older brother who may I add had 24 years of stand up training more years striking then I've been alive beat the living crap outta me on my feet when I was about a month into MT. We went to the gym and suited up and went at it, only good part was after he tooled me he showed me things I should do.
P.S. I got him good though when he started Grappling.

I was mainly defensive, if I remember correctly. I wasn't used to avoiding/blocking strikes so I was trying to get the hang of it, without much success. Anytime I threw it seemed like I was countered too.

But I was sparring with guys who had probably a few months/years experience with sparring.

My first sparring match with somewhat hard shots sucked ass. I landed light jabs and outside leg kicks well, but got yelled out for not engaging and eventually got backed into a corner and wailed on until my headgear was turned sideways and i couldn't see. Then had to yell i give up a few times and looked like a little girl.

My first (And pretty much only) sparring session was about 2 years ago.... I was 12, and for some reason I got signed up for the adults class cause "I was a big boy."

Guy I was sparring with was going pretty easy, he was 16 and was pretty much just nudging me, in the end though he let me hit him in the chin...

I've never been back since XD That sorta stuff just kills you inside, its taken years to get my confidence back :P

My first (boxing) sparring session was about 12 years ago, but I remember it very clearly. It was exactly like yours, Evcity... except it wasn't bodyshots only. :(

first time:

holy shit, this "heavy bag" moves and is trying to hit me back.

My first time sparring was in karate...I barely remember it.

But my first time sparring in muay thai was a total ass kicking..The guy just kept throwing bombs at me and I didn't know what to do. I ended hitting him on the chin *due to my flailing. And he got super pissed and tried knocking me out. I'm surprised he didn't because he was way bigger. All I was doing was shelling up in the corner.

Then later some more experienced guy got in there at started kicking the shit out of him.

I later left the gym after a month. Not because of that ass kicking but because we didn't use headgear shin pads when sparring, horrible instruction and the guy thinks he's still the champion of Canada even though he hasn't fought in years.

Scary!!! lol i got leg kicked so many times I couldnt walk! even with shin pads being worn

ahaha great times

Thanks Dr, excellent point.

I'll relax next time.

Oh man. I'm so glad we weren't going for headshots. I've been training less than a month.

They tried to match me with someone who has the same reach. I'm 6"3 and about 170lbs, tall and skinny. The guy I was sparring was the same height but probably about 30-40lbs heavier than me. He pushed me off balance and around the ring really easily. Cool guy, I'll definitely spar with him again.
