What was Belcher thinking with his guillotine attempts?

You're fighting a world-class grappler and you dump yourself on the ground multiple times attempting the same guillotine again and again against a guy who has never ever been submitted, setting yourself up for some more GNP?

Brilliant game plan.

It's not a gameplan. Okami stifled him badly, and he desperately tried to grab whatever he could.

"Shit I'm losing and I need to do something fast"

He was probably thinking that he has to try and finish the fight any way he can, and he's going to give up the position anyways.

Seems like most mma guys don't understand that concept, we should be applauding the effort not knocking the result.

"I want to give Okami top control so I lose!"

Dumping yourself on your ass is not a good idea if you're getting schooled on the ground.

At the beginning of the third Belcher hit Okami hard and had him wobbled and then of course he decided on a guillotine.

He was losing and was feeling the heat so thought he would go for the desperation sub attempt, may as well.

The guy had just out-grappled Palhares. Can't blame the guy for being confident in his ground game.

Good analysis, except I didn't see any GNP whatsoever

He tried to sub a guy who has one of the best submission defenses in the UFC, a guy whom nobody could even submit in ADCC.

And even after Askren was like "AND STOP GOING FOR CHOKES!" Belcher immediately drops for a guillotine and gets molested for the remainder of the round.

Agreed.

Said the same thing in another thread.

He started out nice and crisp mixing up a head kick and a leg kick and I though for sure we were going to see him do everything to keep the fight standing.

As soon as he did the first guillotine I felt the first pains of frustration. I knew then he was not properly prepared for Okami.

Later on I was frustrated by how much he avoided throwing any kicks at all while they were standing, specifically anything towards Yushin's leading leg which was planted perfectly for him to rush or shoot at will.

Alan either didn't bring in the right game plan or just plain forgot it.

Back to the drawing board, which I hope has in capital letters at the top "DO NOT TRY TO GUILLOTINE WRESTLERS AND GRAPPLERS."

One thing for sure, Belcher should be grateful he isn't going up against Anderson anytime soon.

never mind Anderson, he's lucky he never got to fight Bisping like he wanted.

He hesitated on them kinda knowing he would be on his back. Bad move.

Was it just me, or did it seem like Belcher was training for Bisping more so than he was for Okami?

Between the Vlogs and what he apparently said to Dana at the weigh ins it seems to me that he definitely had Bisping on his mind more than is healthy for someone heading into a fight with a stud like Okami.
