I recently started Jiu-Jitsu and am wondering what everyone else wheres when they grapple. I've seen some in basketball shorts to actual MMA shorts. Im trying to decide whether i should buy MMA shorts because its what im aiming for and whatdo you all wear on top? ( ex.tight shirt, loose shirt, under armour )

i wear a gi... but seriously, guys at my gym who go no-gi, normally just wear board shorts, and a t-shirt, or rash guard... i just recently bought a rash guard to go under my gi, as i was getting dermatitus from the rubbing of my rough-ass gi

hmmmm also i dont know what to get for my knees like maybe wrestling shoot sleeves because the canvas and my knees to go well together, there still all red lol

Any Time You're Drilling Grappling It's Good To Keep Your Body Protected. I Know Some Guys Who Wear Just Shorts, But I Like To Wear Shooting Sleeves, Wrestling Shoes, And Sometimes Headgear To Prevent Cauliflower Ear (depends On What Type Of Grappling I'm Doing). I Haven't Found Any Mma Spacific Gear Of This Type, So Stick With Wrestling Items For Basic Gear.

The clothing you wear effects your development not one bit so just go with what is comfortable. There is no correlation between the clothes you wear and progress however there is this one dude who comes to the gym in a tapout hat, hoody and some sort of Gracie shirt. Then he rolls in his sprawl shorts and koral rashguard. He sucks!

Wear whatever you want dude and as for protection your body will tell you. My ears are pretty safe from cauli's for whatever reason but my knees and toes get cut up like a bitch so I'd suggest a pair of wrestling boots if you get that problem. I'm guessing your place is no gi then or perhaps MMA also? It is a bit more scrappy so a box and mouthguard wouldn't hurt to get.

How about Gi pants and a t-shirt or rash guard. Gi pants aren't expensive and are comfortable to work out in.

As long is it is flexible and comfortable, it does not really matter

Depends who I grapple.. When I grapple my girl.. I usually go in my birthday suit..

In training with the guys I will typically wear shorts and a rashguard..

I always use dryfit Nike shirts or some type of rashgaurd, and just some nike or adidas trunks, the ones with the gay underwear lining in them. I always cut that shit out though. I find those are the best for not restricting movement.

go shirtless with some real short/tight vale tudo shorts. you'll be the most popular guy in class  seriously, like someone mentioned earlier, wear whatever's comfortable. personally, i usually wear an underarmor shirt or a rash guard along with my basketball shorts. i'm hesitant to buy sprawl/tapout shorts because it tends to send the message of "i'm a pretty bad ass grappler or "i'm training to be an mma fighter." neither of which is me.

Actually, my son swears by the vale tudo shorts and a rash guard. He forgot his shorts one day and we bought him a pair of the school motto Vale Tudo shorts (yes, spoiled). He said they are SO much better for grappling than board shorts. He doesn't give a $hit that everybody calls him the "ring girl" to taunt him. He just armbars most of those guys and moves on.

But not every physique is suited to those damned things (my son is single digit body fat). My husband wears Under Armour loose gear, which he likes a lot for just training. They stretch well, breath good, and don't look like ring girl shorts. ;)

K...

They might think you're from Brazil!!! :icon_chee Seriously, those Brazilians are crazy people with no shame whatsoever.

I wear Tap out board shorts and some cheap Old Navy board shorts. I fight in my Tapouts and train in the Old Navy ones and few others. Wear what you are comfortable in. Rash guard isn't a bad idea. Make sure the places you train mop those matts off. I don't roll with people when they are dirty, smelly or have unclipped nails. That is how fucking ring worm gets started. Nasty fuckers not taking care of their personal hygiene.

Remember to wash your ass too before you come to grappling class.

I wear board shorts and a t shirt but hopefully I will be purchasing a rash guard in the near future.

i wear an old t shirt and board shorts
the white belts are decked out in the latest sprawl shorts and a rash guard...

my friends were telling me you gotta wear speedos on the beach or else girls will think you're really insecure in brazil.

Speedos. Definitely speedos. Like Borat's bathing suit.

Seriously though, if you got some surfing board shorts, they'll do just fine. Rashguards are all the same. You don't need to buy an "MMA rashguard" just to grapple, a surfing one does just fine.
