Hey guys

I have a gi tournament coming up next Sunday. I decided to drop down a weight division. I am normally about 79kg/175lbs without the gi and last time I competed in the -82,3kg/-181lbs (with gi) division. The division I am competing in now is the lightweight -76kg/-168lbs division.

I don't think I'll have an issue making weight. I started out at 79kg/175lbs last weekend but I am now down to 76,5kg/169lbs without the gi. I am planning to go down to about 74kg/163lbs to be safe with the gi on.

I am losing the weight by eating really clean, no bread, no sugar, no starch. Pretty much protein and a little fat and some greens for carbs. I am also drinking lots of water and expect much of the weight loss to be water weight.

I don't expect to be very dehydrated on the day of the tournament, but I am worried I'll be lacking energy due to the weight cut in general.

What do you guys reccommend I eat after the weigh in to be able to have as much energy as possible for my matches? I will probably weigh in around 11:30, but my division probably won't start until at least 13:00.

Any tips much appreciated. Thanks!

TL:DR version:
Cutting weight for tournament, about 5kg/11lbs in about one week, same day weigh in, should have about 1,5-2 hours from weigh in until first match.

What do I eat after weigh in to be awesome?

Shrooms

Or

Raisins are very good at giving you energy fast. Lots of fructose and are not hard to digest

I would maybe eat some orange slices and drink some water. You don't want anything too heavy or hard to digest.

I heard from some guy that sugary drinks are good for energy, but good drinks like juice (self made?). Any truth?

Maybe some initial energy, but BJJ tournaments last a while and are pretty physical which could set you up for a major crash.

i usually have a hard boiled egg and some almonds and dried cranberries.

the most important meal is the night before. get everything in. whole wheat pasta, white chicken, brown rice, veggie like broccoli or mixed, tons of water. the next morning eat very light, nice handful of almonds, orange or two, banana or berries and just continue to snack on these all day. drink quite a bit of water too but don't overdo it.

Also make sure to eat something your body is used to, don't surprise it and it won't surprise you.

I always have a small bowl of oats in the morning, and snack on raisins up until the weigh in.

After your first match, depending on the format, you can then eat more.

I always eat a cup of rice after the weigh in for some carbs, or maybe just a protein bar.

That's the key right there. Whatever advice you choose to follow, give it a trial run a few days before and see how your body reacts. Not everyone is the same.

Oatmeal and lots of it. Stay away from refined sugars. No Gatorade until after your first fight (you may crash otherwise).

Granola bars or almonds for me. I typically don't eat/drink til after I weigh in though. Biggest tip I could give you is not to drink too much too fast after weighing in, you'll feel bloated and sick. For same day weigh ins I like to get pedialyte and sip on it, great revival drink.

not a damn thing because you step on the map immediately after you weigh in a la ibjjf

He has a couple hours in the tournament he is going to.

At IBJFF, I have been able to get a little rolled oats and some Pedialyte into me after a weight cut and before I step on the mat. After first match, then more oats and more Pedialyte.

Pedialyte is a good idea. Do you feel this is too sugary when you roll? How do you feel?
