question about 50/50; when you have your legs triangled and your opponent does the same to prevent the HH, what is your course of action? try to untriangle his legs? Toe hold the other foot? tickle him?

SWEEP. I've seen Mendes live several times. Last time he beat Cobrinha with a strange sweep. I don't know the details.

I heard they made the 50/50 guard illegal in competition under brown belt level...

And because of the Mendes/Cobrinha matches, there's been a lot of debate about the position, whether or not it's stallling, when we can really count it as a sweep, etc.

I really don't think that video does much justice. I'd say that video goes more along the lines of how to keep from being leg locked from the 50/50 rather than knowing a plethora of moves.

Ryan had Roller in a gang of holds but couldn't finish any of them because Roller kept taking away all the angles Ryan needed in order to get the finish. Worst of all of that position its just like Kesting always says "whatever you can do to the other guy in that position, can be done to you".

most boring position in grappling IMO i love leg locks but so many matches end up as snore fests when 50/50 arises

yah! make it illegal. And make scarfhold illegal, too. That position really chaps my ass. More move-bannings to follow. Stay tuned.

for bjj under brown belt level there isn't that much you can do once someone locks in the 50/50 if they are on the bottom and up on points. there is a lot of stalling and sweeps aren't what i would really consider sweeps. I personally think mendes uses it to stall and play a really stupid type of game. If heel hooks were legal it would make the position much better

I've never been 50-50'd by a guy who's legs are as strong as mine, but we do have a smaller guy who pops major wood for the position as a heelhook attack position. What I do is rotate my inside leg all the way over and so my hooked knee is damn near touching the floor, then I burst out like I'm coming out of the blocks in a 100 meter dash.

IDK if that's too brutish and would fail against comparable size, but I know 50-50 is not my forte and I'm petrified of inv HH's so I get the hell out of that position.

I think the question was how do you get out of the position?

If you're standing and he's on his back and he locks in the 50/50 on you, can you get out by planting the trapped leg, stepping over him with your free leg and turning so you're facing away from him, then pulling the trapped leg free? Or is that too dangerous?

Hall was threatening, but Roller had good defense. Going by the coaching and Ryan's fakes, you could see the ankle lock, the switchoff to the other leg, the opposite heel hook, the toe hold, and the reverse armlock, all of which are viable options from the 50/50.

If you're experienced, you can angle your legs in ways that make it more like 60/40 in favor of you. In fact, if you have your legs triangled and they don't, it's one step away from checkmate.
