Personally I hate immediate rematches, but I can understand that certain situations might call for them. In my opinion; only highway robberies should get immediate rematches. In every other situation the new and or former champ should have to fight at least one contender before a rematch happens.

An Edgar/Maynard 2 style draw is the only situation in which it is acceptable.

It's also notable that the all the ufc fighters who lost the title and got it back took fights in between.

Only in a razor thin dec between two top 7 ranked fighters. Or we begin to invalidate the initial wins

If it sells more than any other match for the opponent.

That's the only standard for rematch. Meritocratic arguments can GTFO.

I agree, it's more about is it what people really want to see than it is how fair the first fight was

This probably a good one. But it depends on the draw. If the fight is like WB vs Woodly than I wouldn’t be okay with it.

Did the fighter I like lose? If yes, then immediate rematch.

Dana's pupils have to turn into dollar signs, otherwise it's off.

A draw, a controversial decision, or maybe when a hitherto dominant champion loses. When it's a combination of more than one of these, sure.

Pretty much only for championship fights that are close decisions or flukey knockouts, and when the losing fighter was either an established champ with multiple defences, or a clear-cut #2 in the division.

So to use some current examples... Stipe-DC yes, Cejudo-MM yes, TJ-Garbrandt from ufc 227 no

A fight the fans want to see.
Fans wouldn’t want to see another fight if one fighter got dominated. (Unless they really hate that guy)

Honestly it depends on a couple of things.

    1. Was there any controversy in a decision or a DQ?

    2. What is the current state of the division in question? If there are no other hot contenders then a rematch can make sense.

    Just come to sherdog.

If you see thread after thread of gloating or "See I told you so's" then no rematch.

If you see threads of nothing but whining, complaining or wanting new judges and or scoring stips....then rematch granted.

This fuckin place has all the answers

    DJ deserves one.
    Stipe deserves one.
    Anderson did.
    Joanna did.

Can't think of another but basically if you dominated a decision and then lost in any fashion aside from a lopsided beatdown.
