What separates Mir's submissions from the rest

Mir does not brag about holding subs too long. Don't make shit up.

He's said if an opponent doesn't tap he'll snap their limb no problem. Not exactly bragging but also showing a level of sadism that people are attributing to Palhares.

I don't think anything is different really, other then he is a very large strong HW and it really doesn't take from a guy that burly to snap limbs

So if they don't tap, he didn't hold it too long. Did he?

Seems somewhat similar to the Josh Barnett "catch wrestling" submission style. Like Roy said a couple of posts up, IMO many Brazilian HW submission artists are coming from a pure BJJ background.

When Mir and Barnett were growing up in the USA, BJJ was not that popular here at that time. I'd throw a young Jeff Monson into that group.

It just seems like they were among the first US HW's on board seriously focusing on submissions.

That said, again IMO, the Brazilian HW submission artists are far more comfortable working from the bottom that you Mir's, Barnetts and Monsons who basically adjusted their overall grappling styles to give them the best opportunity to work from the top.

I dunno, Mir seems pretty comfortable working from guard.

Some might say too comfortable...

I disagree with the Frank Mir part. I am not a huge fan of his, but I love watching him fight. He and Werdum are the ONLY HW fighters comfortable on the bottom. Frank has subbed Big Nog and Brock, both on the ground while he was on his back. Frank and Werdum are the ONLY two HW submission specialists that are as dangerous on their backs as they are on the feet. Barnett seems like the guy on top especially with his takedowns but fighters like Barnett and Ronda are both ( I have heard and read this) black belt level in BJJ even if they did not have official black belts to show for it, simply due to their outstanding grappling backgrounds and who they were trained by, Billy Robinson and Gene Lebell respectively.

I disagree with you. There is a very simple explanation about why your point is incorrect too. I am not being disrespectful but I need to point this out since I have NOT read anyone else's post that has pointed this out yet. Brazilian BJJ black Belts usually try NOT to tap. Doing so is admitting failure and I have read and listened to interviews stating that is why Big Nog never tapped until it was too late.

It is old school pride running their actions. There is a ton of difference if your opponent is prideful and a noted BJJ practitioner and someone frantically tapping not only on your leg but the referee needing to break your arm lock on your opponents legs.

That IS sadism. You cannot attribute the same to Frank whose opponents either did not notice they were injured (Big Tim) or Big Nog who did not really want to tap because of the Brazilian BJJ cultural belief that you do not tap.

No, that is totally different from Palhares you moron. Palhares holds after people tap. Mir has never done that. It's up to his opponents to tap if they don't want to get hurt; if they don't, it's not really Mir's fault.

Some of you cannot possibly be this stupid to not see a difference. Palhares has injured numerous peoples knees holding on the leglocks after they tap.

The pride thing has been brought up before where old pros like Big Nog would sooner let you snap than tap. I recall seeing an interview with Mir where he said "tap or snap" with that characteristic smug look on his face.

Also his training partner said this prior to the DC fight:

Robert Drysdale said:
the guy catches you and you don’t see that coming. You can’t tap, you have to scream. If you try to tap out he breaks you in half.

Mir has injured 3 people with his submissions.
