Guys like cowboy Cerrone have lost fights because they are slow starters.

Is it excessive weight cutting or something mental?

Starting slow.

Just kidding, it's most likely something mental.

Something mental. Lots of guys don't seem to get moving until they break a sweat. Others don't until they get hit good at least once. It depends on the fighter.

Some fighters need to get hurt a bit before they really start fighting.

I'm no expert, but I'd say it's mostly a mental thing.

Not starting quickly is what usually does it.

Anxiety

GSQuit used to be an incredibly slow starter but settled in and made adjustments as the fight went on.

Some fighters just need to settle in and figure out what their opponent is doing first. Basically just to feel the opponent out and figure out what they need to do as opposed to just going for it and taking a bigger risk.

it's mental. Cowboy for instance comes out timid in a lot of his fights but once in a while he comes out aggressive from the start.

I remember Cejudo with half of his body numbed against MM.

Shitty warmup could be a factor ....but more often than not it’s a mental thing .... some people need to get punched to fully realize they’re in a fight

Some fighters need to take a punch to relaize it's not gonna end them, or hurt them severely, so they can remember what it feels like to get hit, or take their time, and find out their oppiennts rhythym, and any habits they have, or what type of game plan they're gonna use.

It probably varies fighter to fighter and fight to fight. Could be mental, or physical, but it could be strategic. Anderson often started slow, got a feel for things, looked for a flaw he could exploit then capitalized. Cowboy has 16 finishes in the UFC if I'm remembering that stat right, he definitely has the most wins in UFC history, so I have to assume he knows what he's doing and more or less, it's working for him.

Alcohol in his blood make him cold on start of fight

If it's Mousasi, it's boredom.
If A. Silva, "gathering data."
If Conor, ring rust.
If Jorge, lack of food...
It varies.
