Hey guys

just curious what made you choose the current bjj school you were at as well as were you torn between two schools? if so how did you make you're decision?

myself I'm torn between two schools there both the exact distance from my house so that is not a factor.

the schools I'm torn between are nava bjj (under paul nava) and gustavo dates bjj both AZ

Choosing between two schools, I always looked at a couple of weighted variables.

Competition mindset/success, aka number of quality members.

Style differences, and what suited me better.

Community, friendliness, etc. Mean very little to me because I like to compete, but if you're doing bjj casually you should favor the other end of the spectrum and put more weight on how you like the other members and get along with them.

I've been torn between gyms a couple times but going and rolling with them is hugely important, and simple. Example: I rolled with one moderately respected gym here, and eventually their black belt instructor asked to roll with me. He tapped me with a leg lock or two in our roll, but I swept him a couple times. That, and the style differences between what they like and what I like stylistically caused me to rule them out.

Both are good schools. I've never visited the GD school, but Nava BJJ has some awesome people there, and they also host an annual tournament.

But on topic: My current school choice was made due to proximity as well as price. I checked the place out and found some good people there, so i stayed.

Paul Nava seems like a cool dude. He threw me when I got promoted to blue belt. Plus his students been doing well in competitions.

When I lived in AZ, I trained at Team Megaton for a few months in 07 and didnt even think about training anywhere else... but I moved across the city and it was just too far to drive, there were no schools anywhere close so I didnt train again for over 3 years and a cross country move. It makes me kind of sad looking back that Mackenzie was a fresh Blue belt during my time there... throw an extra 4 years onto the fact Im a purple belt now and Id be a lot closer to black. :/

I wanted to train with a legit instructor with a good reputation, went to bullshido and the answer was pretty much unanimous... Steve Hall is the best in Charlotte. It didnt hurt that it was also the closest to me (at the time) as well.

It was the only school that had a strong emphasis on no-gi around me at the time.
