What is your earliest memory of the internet? Your first computer?

The internet was basically bulletin boards at the start, but I do remember my first set of internet boobs. After downloading for 40 minutes or so, I got a glorious 2 inch by 2 inch pic.

Trying to date people eh? ;)

Earliest memory of the internet I'm not sure. I remember the sound of it connecting though of course. Don't remember first computer, but Catacomb The Abyss, X-Wing, and Lemmings were some of my first games. X-Wing was on those big thin floppy discs, had Lemmings on the 3.5" or whatever. I remember Windows 95 being wild, I was astounded when things could be installed in Windows lol.

I remember going to the AOL chat rooms and also the AOL newsgroups. Gundam Wing was airing on tv and the gundam model newsgroup had info about the model kits.

It was 1999 when i bought an iMac G3. Not sure what color variant, either blue or blueberry but the translucent colored plastic was neat at the time. It also used CDs and had the hockey puck shaped mouse. It must have been the slot-loading model because I recognize the front.

What is your earliest memory of the internet? And what was your first computer?

1993.

IBM(can't remember exact model, maybe a ps2) w 4mb ram , a 4x CD ROM drive and a 14.4k modem.

I learned how to use dos pretty well, learned how to use ancient net, managed to illegally get my hands on some pirated software and games via early 14.4k tech, which took forever. Got back hands from my mom when they realized who was racking up the phone bill.

Earliest memories of song downloading via Napster , limewire and kazaa were classic. Start downloading songs, leave for hours, only to come back and realize it's still not done, or when it finishes it was a corrupted file or a crappy download. A cd would take forever to create from downloading the songs to burning, so every cd your make would have to be the best songs... No filler at all. Covers/labels/cd art would be in full effect. I still have old mix CDs from like 20 years ago.

Also, Diablo 2 Lord of destruction

Fuck that game was so fire when it came out

I remember being in the air force when it first started. we didn't know anything about what to avoid or watch out for. there was a popular chat room called icq where basically anything goes. I remember clicking on a thread and then a link and there was some very obvious kiddie porn when it opened up. it was really bad quality, so it took me a second to realize what it was. when I did, my heart when in my throat, I shut the computer off and unplugged it for a week. I was just waiting for the base police to knock on my door or show up at my shop and haul me away. it took about a month for me to start to feel safe. I learned quickly to be careful on what you click.

on a side note, another guy on base did get hauled away in that time frame for having a bunch of it on his computer

It would have been late 90s for me probably 98’ish we got a PC at home with dialup Internet and did the usual chat rooms stuff and sending an email to a mate was a huge novelty

in the early 2000s onwards I have more memories though

Habbo Hotel
MSN Messenger
Games like create a ride
Yahoo Pool

Unreal Tournament
Quake

Kazaa / Limelight / Morpheus

Burning CDs and later DVDs

Dos, Sierra games, qbasic. AOL, compuserve, imagination, meta crawler, I’m forgetting a bunch. Porn images that took an hour to download while my modem made screeching noises, search for the wrong thing and you get a thousand viruses pop ups. The list goes on and on.

First computer was a Commodore 64; first computer capable of internet connection was a Toshiba model (dark green?); first computer with realized internet connection was an early Pavilion model (2000), if memory serves correct.

Intel 486 DX2-66. Probably late 90's. Took a few days to download a porn video and then it was a risky click to find out if what you've downloaded is something a lot different..

I was four in '92 and my father had a laptop for work. He would bring it home every night and put me in front of it and have me type on it for like fifteen minutes before I could dick around on paint.

In terms of Internet, it wasn't until around '94 when I was shown chat rooms. My parents separated and I was able to talk to my dad via the chat rooms.

Playing Diablo while listening to Dj Shadow mixtapes.

First computer was a Compaq. For internet, I would rotate the free trials that were sent in the mail (AOL, Compuserve, Netzero). Earliest memories consisted of AOL chatrooms and being bombarded with one of two questions...

1) ASL?
2) Gay, Bi, Curious???

Getting incoming phone calls from friends, seeing it on the computer screen and being mesmerized by it
